Consultant Mike Murphy: GOP Facing Ice Age (Says GOP needs homosexuals to break the ice)
http://www.newsmax.com/ ^ | June 15, 2009 | Jim Meyers

Posted on 06/15/2009 4:41:15 PM PDT by Maelstorm

A Republican renewal could still be possible, according to Murphy, because "conservatism is traditionally energized by a reaction to liberal excess, and the unabashedly leftish tilt of the Obama administration's domestic agenda does give hope. But demography is a powerful force."

Republicans need to become more socially libertarian on issues such as gay rights to appeal to young voters, and to support practical immigration reform to win more of the Latino vote, Murphy suggests, adding:

"Saving the GOP is not about diluting conservatism but about modernizing it to reflect the country it inhabits instead of an America that no longer exists."

Maybe the GOP should retain James Carvil ande Paul Bigala to contribute to this wisdom.

All the GOPers need to do is spend more time in their districts and get a sense of what the people want FROM THE PEOPLE!!!

Notice to the GOP: Toss the fruits out in the street, they are not a popular element in this country. Come out aggressively against illegal immigration. Doing both of these, you would likely get half the Democrats to come over and likely landslide most elections for two decades.

"Romney Disses Palin Again - This Time by Proxy"
"Who's Mike Murphy? He's a Romney guy!
He's hated Palin from Day One...when she was announced as McCain's VP nominee,
he was the jerkwad on the air with Peggy Noonan when she made her infamous hot-mike disparaging remarks about Palin...
nd he himself was calling the Palin choice "gimmicky" and "cynical."
They never gave Palin a chance.
They had contempt for her and for the ordinary Americans she represents."

"Murphy is a Romney hack.
Although he worked for McCain in 2000, he switched to help Romney for the 2008 race.
He now works for Palin-deranged MSNBC as a token Republican."

"Prop 8 garnered better than 40% of the youth vote after a bit of advertising."

I don't know what the answer is to minimizing the advantage (almost 2-1) that Democrats enjoy with the 18-29 demographic. I do know that so-called "gay marriage" is an issue that is far more important to them than it is to their older voting peers.

Prop 8 did not even come close to 40% of the youth vote. Every exit poll I saw was barely 31% of the under-30 crowd that voted for Prop 8. If you have contradictory information, please post it because I'd like to look at it.

Murphy is an idiot, but he's right insomuch that the GOP cannot comeback so long at Democrats are winning national elections with 18-29 demographic like they won (66%-33%) in the last election. Since Reagan last won reelection, the GOP has been getting an dwindling percentage of an age group that is ignored, at the peril of conservatives.

I also think his advice is foolish, but the argument isn’t about homosexuals voting at all.

His point here is that the attitude towards homosexuals (or rather gay marriage specifically) is a cultural marker for a large subset of non-homosexuals, and in order for Republicans to appeal to these people we must adopt positions that make us more culturally acceptable.

Or lets just put it this way - Republicans aren’t fashionable, and many people don’t vote for us because they are trivial and fashion-driven. If we adopted these fashionable positions some of these trivial people will be more likely to vote our way.

This guy is giving the kind of “advice” that can be expected from a fith columnist...if undertaken, such a move will discourage the GOP base so that we are sure to lose another election.

The left has infiltrated the GOP - this has been obvious for a while now.

In the “middle of the road” all you get is run over.

What did the Dem’s do following their 2004 losses?

They found the Senator with the most LIBERAL record and elected him President.

When you stand for nothing there is no message.
Standing for “everything” is the same as standing for nothing.

You are right about that with guys like this advising our candidates we are doomed. They are opportunistic worms. I’ve seen worms with more integrity feeding off of road kill. This “strategy” is accept liberalism(he wants to call it libertarianism which it is not) as the dominant social/political reality. This is not how to win this is how to surrender. Conservatism is growing not shrinking. This man knows this and I believe is trying to sabotage a conservative renaissance. They are afraid of us because they know that men who can speak truth to power are very dangerous in a world without leaders. We will not stand down. The strong shall reclaim their birthright.

Sexual orientation should not be included in the same sentence. It is not a civil right.

Exactly. You don’t really win by retreating on issues which you are winning. Geesh if the GOP were to really run and make the case against social liberalism and run and make the case against socialism without mincing words they might win something. Instead people like this guy offer up slightly modified liberalism as conservatism. This is why so many conservatives have exited the party and now identify themselves as independents. It is hard to get excited about people who will not practice the principles they claim to hold.
