Seeking Answers on IG Firing, Sen. Grassley Asks About Possible Role of First Lady's Office
ABC News - Political Punch ^ | June 15, 2009 | Jake Tapper

Posted on 06/15/2009 9:34:21 AM PDT by Big_Monkey

In an email and fax sent late Friday, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, demanded that Alan D. Solomont, the chairman of the Corporation for National and Community Service, provide "any and all records, email, memoranda, documents, communications, or other information, whether in draft or final form" related to President Obama's firing of CNCS Inspector General Gerald Walpin.

Walpin had investigated Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson's community service organization, St. HOPE Academy, which confessed to misusing AmeriCORPS grants. In April of this year, St. HOPE Academy agreed to pay a $423,836.50 settlement -- $72,836.50 of which would be paid personally by Mayor Johnson.

"For reasons that I do not yet understand, the OIG was excluded from this proceeding and the settlement lifting the suspension, was done in complete disregard of the OIG’s findings, as well as the previous determination of wrong doing identified in the Notice of Suspension," Grassley wrote. "Perhaps the settlement agreement was reached without any input from the OIG, because less than half of what was misused by the Corporation grantees is being returned to the taxpayer and the OIG would not have agreed to this arrangement. In fact, an argument can be made that not even half of the misused funds is being returned, because the settlement does not require that payment in full be made. Rather the settlement places the grantees on a type of payment plan that will occur over a decade; to date less than 10% of the misused money has been recovered."

At least Grassley's not letting this go. It's too bad that ABC News is only covering this on Jake Tapper's blog, and not on their World News broadcast.

Didn’t something like this happen with the Clinton’s in the beginning of their administration?

Expect the same results.

I stopped reading at “Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, demanded.”
All for show. The right is barely putting on a pretentious fight.

This will also go the way of “PelosieGate” and all the other corrupted crappers.

Repeat slowly after me:

Well at least the FBI didn’t make a trumped up case against him like the Travel Office.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that.

So far the GOP is putting up a pretty big fight over socialized medicine. Due largely to Grassley.

He's a good man. Conservatives don't like him because he lacks "charisma". But he's a man that seems to get things done.

The Republicans better wake up and start fighting back and demanding many investigations soon. The power mad so-called POTUS will do anything he pleases, as long as he can get away with it. The Fed needs a serious investigation, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, some DEM senators, this whole TARP affair, the IMF and its demands, etc. Never mind GM!
How about cap and trade?

Looks like the President fired Walpin so he could make a deal with St Hope so they wouldn’t have to return the stolen funds.

So Walpin does his job in investigating fraud and fired for doing his job. Typical dimocRAT administration.

My point is that Repubs ARE wide awake.

Cap and trade? It's on the ropes at the moment.

In the Senate, they are having a hard time finding enough DEMOCRATS to pass it.

THANK YOU!!! Grassley is doing a great job and when those on our own side refuse to find anything good about Republicans, it gets downright disgusting. Free Republic is infected with these gloom and doomers who refuse to see anything good in any Republican. I do not understand their agenda except they love to consider themselves victims. They would make better Democrats and they have the same effect.

“”Didn’t something like this happen with the Clinton’s in the beginning of their administration?””

No - The AG - Janet Reno fired ALL the US Attorneys - some 90 at the beginning of Clinton’s presidency. This is an Inspector General - put in place by Congress (in GWB’s administration) and removable only by Congress.

Remember GWB fired 9 US Attorneys and the ruckus that was raised over that?

IG’s are there to investigate waste and fraud - every Federal agency has their own IG.

I have been reading about this for nearly a week online and yet not word from even FOX on the story or conservative talk radio. Don’t understand.

I think we need to be careful about this one - it's easy to look at this as retribution for Walpin's investigation of Obama's buddy Johnson, but (from what I've read about the situation), Walpin is not entirely in the right here. He made accusatory public comments about a candidate for public office (Johnson), weeks before a contested election. That's a big no-no for government investigators/inspectors/officials.

Of course, we should go after Obama on this - it sure looks like he violated the IG Reform Act, and MO's involvement certainly seems suspect - but we need to be aware that Walpin's hands are not clean here. Given the (near-criminal) MSM bias/Obama-protectionism, we need to be aware going in of the likely response, so we can get out ahead of the curve and attack Obama on things that cannot be defended (i.e., even if it was proper to fire Walpin, Obama did it in a clearly illegal way).

To be fair, I know that Rush spoke at some length about this last Thursday or Friday. I think Neil Boortz did as well. I'm not sure about anyone else.
