WASHINGTON, DC - The nation's longest-serving United States senator remained under a doctor's care this week in Washington.
Senator Robert C. Byrd, 91, a West Virginia Democrat, was said by his staff to be receiving treatment for a staph infection.
Media accounts have said that Byrd, who has been in frail physical condition for some time, has been confined to a Washington, D.C. area hospital since May 15.
Byrd's spokesman, Jesse Jacobs, would not reveal the site where Byrd was confined when asked last week. He also would not discuss the severity of Byrd's illness. A source, usually reliable, said that the senator was not, in fact, in a hospital but was being treated at a private home in suburban Washington.
Regardless, Byrd's ill health has caused an outpouring of public support and concern for the veteran lawmaker. The Sunday (Charleston) Gazette-Mail contained a lengthy article about Byrd and his friendship with United States Senator Ted Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat. The story noted that Byrd opposed Kennedy's brother, John, when he was a candidate for president in the West Virginia primary in 1960. But when Kennedy won the Democratic nomination, Byrd was one of his staunchest supporters, according to the story by Paul Nyden.
Byrd's health and advanced age have led to speculation in recent years that he might step down. Sources close to Byrd have insisted, however, that he has no intention of doing so.

I suspect he doesn’t maintain a house in WV, the state he supposedly represents.
I think he has a house there somewhere around Beckley.
Donations can be made to his re-election committee.
Also, when he checks out of the hospital, will he be taking the sheets with him?
Byrd. Kennedy. That Johnson guy from N. Dakota.
Seems like there was at least one more.
Ha ha ha, that's a good one, a Democrat "stepping down!" These slime balls are so thirsty for power they can't step down.
I hope he’s doing ok. But, for someone his age, shouldn’t he think about retirement?
I don’t get what the mystery is. He may have issues that many older people have. He should take care of his health of course. But, if he’s not able to do his job in the Senate anymore, I hope he’s able to make the decision to retire.
The Dems remind me more and more of a politburo hanging on to power instead of resigning. Byrd, Kennedy, Johnson, do they even do any work anymore?
Two high-profile white supremacists are currently receiving hospital care. One will be arrested for murder. One is a distinguished member of the US Senate. What a country!
Well, then only the voters can retire him. I don’t know when he needs to run for re-election, but the voters may take care of it then.
Then again, on the other hand, the voters of WV love this man and all the pork that he has sent to his chronically economically depressed state. I bet he might never lose an election as long as he lives.

I can see it now, rigormotissed senator plays in new movie...
Weekend at “Byrdies”
Interesting.
I managed to p.o. a funeral home director in Elkins, West By God a few years ago. I was in the coffee room when he walked in and pointed out a picture of Byrd appearing in a local parade hanging on the wall. I noted that it was too bad it wasn’t Byrd’s funeral procession. The air was abnormally frosty after that.
That’s good. Then will WV burn a cross in his honor? Just askkkkkking.
Now that’s funny. :)
