Detainees Freed in Bermuda Say China Worse Than Gitmo
FOXNews ^ | June 13, 2009 | FOXNews

FOX News spotted the newly freed detainees at a guest cottage complex on the island without security or electronic monitoring, but their attorney said they will have to periodically check in with local police

The four of the Chinese Muslims, or Uighurs, released to Bermuda from the Guantanamo Bay prison told FOX News that they are innocent, glad to be free and hold no grudges against the United States for their captivity.

"We are not terrorists," they told FOX News with the help of a translator. "We don't know what Al Qaeda is. We don't know Usama bin Laden.

The four, who range from 31 to 38 years old, also said they think life under oppressive rule in China, where they face persecution, is worse than life at Guantanamo.

Their attorney says the Uighurs are determined to stay in Bermuda as part of a guest worker program. There is a provision in that program that in limited circumstances allows guest workers to get Bermudian citizenship.

On Friday, some members of the Bermudan government who said they'd not been informed of the transfer questioned the wisdom of moving the inmates to the island located 640 miles off the coast of North Carolina, saying it could hurt tourism, which is Bermuda's chief industry.

But the Bermudan government defended its decision to take the Uighurs, whom the U.S. feared would face torture if sent back to China.

The Uighurs told FOX News that they plan to make their home in Bermuda, probably working first in some form of manual labor. They also may open a restaurant and look forward to swimming and fishing.

It's been reported that these guys were spotted in a Men's Warehouse store purchasing clothes....They were flown on a private aircraft, put up somewhere..

Now given the the congress refused to budget monies for the closing of Gitmo and relocation of the prisoners....

Just where did this money come from???

I figured we didn’t send them there because we felt they would be dealt with by the boys in Beijing. Could be wrong.

I do think sending any of the detainees we pick up in or around the battlefield are enemy combatants. If they are set free, Disney World, Palau, Cancun and Bermuda would not be on my list.

I would send them back to their respective government and let them deal with them. One exception would be Saudi Arabia. They would just rearm them and send them back in the field to fight us.

Hope our guys in Gitmo are not being duped by the prisoners. We some times just feel sorry for people and buy into their BS.

I’m sure I am wrong about that.

Thanks for sending earlier link.

I can’t believe this.

Take them out of GITMO and send them to Sandals?

I could swear I just read that he is planning to send about 100 detainees to Saudi Arabia. Not Uighurs, I think these ones are Yemeni.

I believe a couple have already been resettled there.

Heard the same thing. Someone wrote on another thread they were to attend something like an reeducation program/school. Training them I guess on not getting caught next time.

Like the other four that popped up on jihad vids (one of which went on to be the head of alQ in Yemen).

That’s hope and change.

I’m sure the NY Times is putting that headline on page 1

From reading the comments, it seems some of the citizens in Bermuda aren’t happy about this. It’s another obummer FU to the Uk. Our tax dollars get to buy them a house and set them up there. How lovely. FUBo you arrogant PIG.

Does anyone know how many millions we paid them to take these guys? I’m sure that “guest cottage” isn’t being paid for by the Bermuda government! They want to open a restaurant. So, how do they pay for that?

If the 17 guys were innocent in the first place, where and when and why did the US pick them up?

The lack of curiosity in today's journalism is amazing! This should have been the first information released - what they were charged with.

I just saw the links above - good info. Most journalists don’t care enough to wonder about their “crimes”.
