Look up "Nojeh Coup". In 1980 Iranian ex-Shah Generals tried to topple the mullahs with a well planned operation.
Carter let them down, and the mullahs were warned by Saddam. He did this to set the stage for an purge within the Iranian military, to weaken them before his invasion.
