Lawmakers Chide Automakers Over Dealership Cuts

GM Issues State-by-State Closings List

By Dan Eggen and Kendra Marr

Washington Post Staff Writers

Saturday, June 13, 2009

Out of the 1,323 General Motors dealers targeted for elimination, the most will come from Pennsylvania.

Ninety dealerships will be forced to wind down in the state. Pennsylvania is followed by Ohio with 79, Illinois with 66, California with 65 and New York with 60.

GM, which has declined to name individual dealers, released the state-by-state list for the first time yesterday to a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee. And lawmakers vented their frustration, demanding that GM and Chrysler executives provide even more detailed explanations of their restructuring decisions.

"I don't understand how they're costing you money," Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.), who invited a Pittsburgh dealer to testify, told the automakers. "I think they're a revenue stream for you guys. And if for some reason this has to happen, I want to know why you're not taking care of people who spent 70 years and generations selling your cars."

Blah, blah, blah...

The Obama regime ordered the closures over the OBJECTIONS of Chrysler management, and provided a list of Republican Donor dealerships to close.

Notice how Ford, Honda, Toyota, etc. are not closing a single dealership.

The government has no business telling people what kind of cars they should drive.

That is for the marketplace and the laws of supply and demand to determine. Not the federal government.

I think it is about time that the American people as a whole tell the federal government to stay out of private business completely. It’s one thing to oversee business in geenral but it is quite another when government runs and controls businesses which is clearly unconstitutional.

Maybe this is a dumb question but why do they figure that after making and I suppose selling 16 million cars last year that going forward they will only sell 9 million? Did America loose 7 million car owner/drivers somewhere? I would think that after things recover that they would sell more than the 9 million eventually.

"The cost to Chrysler of an over-sized dealer network includes both lost sales and excessive spending," said Chrysler President Jim Press"

HOW SO?

I (and others here) have been asking this question, without satisfactory, reply.

However, none of us had the opportunity, presented our Clueless, Congress-Critters, and therefore (unless I missed it and its reported elsewhere?) WHY did not ONE of our esteemed, Reps, push these CEO's for detailed explanations on what "COSTS SAVINGS" they expect to realize?

I know nothing about car dealerships, but do have a Masters in Business and have had franchises in the past.

I've NEVER heard of a Franchisor forcing the closing of a Franchisee (other than for cause) if and when, they were making money, which in turn, benefits the Company and does NOT usually cost the Company anything for maintaining same!

SOMETHING STINKS IN DENMARK--OR IN THIS CASE, D.C.!!!

Has ANYONE here, seen ANY reasonable explanation--or for that matter, ANY explanation, whatsoever???

If I remember right they did and it was $41,000 each.

They say to avoid the car assembled on a Friday afternoon.
Who would want a car designed by a government committee and assembled by disgruntled workers?

Sure. They are mostly GOP contributors. It's Payback Time.

But if you are looking for a good business reason for doing so,... no, I can't think of one.

I think Americans should stop buying all cars made from now on by GM and Chrysler. Buy a Ford, Honda or Toyota instead.

“Domestic-auto dealers and their employees contributed more than $9 million to federal candidates in 2007 and 2008, while foreign-car dealerships and their workers gave more than $17 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. About three-quarters of the donations in both categories went to Republicans, with defeated presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) leading the pack. “

This would tend to support the notion that a large majority of the dealerships slated for closure should, in fact, be conservative leaning. That seems to be supported in the anecdotal information available from a variety of sources.

With that in mind, I think we still need to understand the quantitative benchmarks used to determine which dealerships would be closed out. The qualitative criteria have been published, and include market penetration, sales data, profitability, sales mix, and other items.

If anyone has a link to the quantitative pieces, please post.
