DPP says Watson murder charge 'wouldn't hold up' (man watched his wife drown and let her)

THERE was no reasonable prospect of proving a murder charge against American man Gabe Watson, the Director of Public Prosecutions said today.

Tony Moynihan S.C. today said the decision to accept Watson’s plea of guilty to the manslaughter of his wife on a Queensland diving holiday "was made after a careful and thorough examination of the admissible evidence, and was not taken lightly", The Courier-Mail reported.

Mr Moynihan said that "given the complex circumstantial nature of the case, Mr Watson’s admission that he breached his duty to render assistance to his wife ultimately meant there was no reasonable prospect of proving, beyond a reasonable doubt, that he was guilty of murder".

He said he would not comment further.

But the matter may not be finalised for Watson, with reports from America suggesting the jailed honeymoon dive death killer may still be charged with murder in the United States.

Prosecutors in the Alabama attorney general's office said they will pursue the charges against Watson, if they can find evidence that he plotted to kill his bride of 11 days, Christina "Tina" Watson while at home in Alabama and then carried out the plan while honeymooning in Australia, The Birmingham News reports.

Yes, it looks like that may have been the motive.

I’ve wondered the same thing numerous times. Why would you marry someone only to kill her/him less than 2 weeks later unless it was for money?

I suppose he could have fallen out of love or found someone else, but then why get married? Why not just call it off?

What I wonder is if because of the nature of his plea, he might still be eligible to receive the life insurance, assuming for a moment that these is life insurance.

I’ve heard this case discussed among lawyers and investigators numerous times, yet nobody ever addresses the “why” and whether or not there was life insurance on her.

If they had pictures and other people were around, I’m confused how he caused (or didn’t prevent) her death. I’ve not kept up from the beginning.

what is the story here? he turned off her air supply valve?

How much weight was she wearing to sink like that?

I have gone diving- trust me the HARD thing to do is sink - unless you have enough weight on your weight belt.

Last time I went I could barely get under the water - i was bobbing up and down like a cork.

Why didnt she drop her belt and rise to the surface?
