Laura explains Bush 'silence' Defends Cheney
Politico ^ | 6/08.09 | By CAROL E. LEE

Former first lady Laura Bush said while her husband, George W. Bush, does not think it’s appropriate for a former president to criticize his successor, she understands why former Vice President Dick Cheney has.

“That’s his right as a citizen of the U.S., and I think he also feels obligated and so I understand why he wants to speak out,” Bush said in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “On the other hand George feels like as a former president that he owes President Obama his silence on issues and that there’s no reason to second guess any decisions he makes.”

The former first lady also approves of Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, saying “she sounds like a very interesting and good nominee.”

“As a woman I’m proud that there might be another woman on the court,” Bush said. “So we’ll see what happens, but I wish her well.”

Asked about the infighting within the Republican Party, Bush said while she and former President Bush “talk about it a lot,” it’s “probably not that bad.”

“I think it’s just a very typical political cycle,” she said of the GOP’s shrinking status. “It’s like creative tension within a party for people to talk about what it is they – how they want to be represented

It’s called, “respect for the office”. Look it up. The Bushes have it, the Clintons, Gores, Obamas and Carters never heard of it.

a personal preference on his part not to do the "PR" stuff.

A good solid "Cloth Coat Republican" answer. However, Goody, communication is a key, perhaps THE key, part of a leader's job, whether GW personally liked it or not. cf. Ronald Reagan.

If he had this personal antipathy to PR, he should have delegated PR to someone else, and made sure it was effective.

An enduring mystery: Why Republicans, ostensibly the businessman's party, are loathe to do proper marketing and PR. Instead, they tend to fall prey to every marketing charlatan in DC and run campaigns that even a used car dealer would scorn. My advice to the RNC, use the Yellow Pages. You'll get better results.

“He most certainly DID! You can be forgiven for not knowing it, though, because the MSM had a virtual blackout on anything positive the President said. They only talked about him or his policies in order to criticize him.”

You have got to be kidding. All he had to do was call a nationwide address to the public prime time from the Oval months about every 3 months to let the American people know that we were in for a long slog in the WOT.

He didn’t use the bully pulpit or the power of the Presidency at all in selling the war and continuing to sell the war.

I guess you never listened to Tony Snow. He was magnificent.

(Please cite evidence that Ronald Reagan defended himself in let's say, the Iran Contra "scandal." I think your fuzzy Reagan memory is...........fuzzy).

SuziQ is right.

He defended his policies OFTEN. He was ignored by the MSM.............and obviously some conservatives.

Those of us who paid close attention to what he said know what he said..........and how often.

Very poor taste in that when Reagan testified about Iran Contra he couldn’t remember anything.

George Herbert Walker Bush and George W. Bush: Echoing the likes of Charles I of England, Louis XVI of France, and Nicholas II of Russia (all good Christian men who ushered in the most radical regimes in history)

Yep and lord McCain is like Napoleon without a horse.

My memory is just fine, DMan.

It's accurate. No fuzz. No deification of the man who did his best, but was not perfect.

No "poor taste" either. Just asking for clarification of the "Reagan was perfect" historically inaccurate fuzz that goes on here.

I don't hate GWB, I pity and pray for him! I also pity and pray for those who followed so lemming-like in praising him, as if he were a deity, in the old daily GWB Prayerfest when, IMHO, they should have been praying instead for 1. the United States of America 2. our troops that defend us, and 3. finally for Providence to grant him leadership and guidance!

Sorry you cannot separate disagreement from "unpleasant memories;" pity!

So, you actually believe that he could publicly duel with the press who detest him, lie about him and have unending hours of airtime and gallons of ink ?

Well, not "duel," perhaps, but rather forthrightly state a position and defend it publicly.

BTW, before you dipped your keyboard in vitriol, you might have notoiced that I agree with you on

George Bush is a very savvy man with class, integrity, and decency. If for no other reason, he will not cast stones against the unseemly Blamer (unless something unspeakably outrageous transpires) because of his high respect FOR THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENCY.

Which is exactly why I maintained that his silence now is a good thing. When he held the job, it was not a good thing. Period. Like it or not, effective communication is part of the POTUS' job. If the MSM is as always against the GOP, a Republican POTUS has to "go over their heads" and talk directly to the people.

We'll never know whether that would have worked for GW, but my only thought on the matter is that he might have tried.

by the end of the obamas' reign, popular thought will have already begun to reframe W in a similar light as Reagan IMO..."the right man for the time"

for all the "bad" Bush is justifiably blamed for, his many "good" actions will be his legacy and rightfully so...
no matter how hard the MSM, Rats and 'haters' try to rewrite history.

You are exactly right, xhrist.

In fact, it's already begun to turn because of the horror of what Obama is now doing. The MSM has stopped the daily lies and endless personal attacks, and people are beginning to think about what really happened during the Bush presidency and how strong a President he was.

(Some folks on this thread, excepted, of course.....;)
