PETROS, Tenn. - A Morgan County commissioner has drafted a proposal urging the state to consider moving terrorism suspects from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay to a recently closed state prison.
The last inmates were taken out of the 113-year-old Brushy Mountain Correctional Complex in East Tennessee on Thursday. But commissioner Nick Bishop says bringing in those detainees would create jobs. He plans to introduce the proposal later this month.
The state still owns the prison, but correction department spokeswoman Dorinda Carter says it could be turned over to Morgan County for economic development. She says department commissioner George Little wouldn't support housing Guantanamo detainees there.

Why not send all the Gitmo detainees over to the Gore mansion.
East Tennessee, even more outside the U. S Justice system than Gitmo.
And have Algore convert them from the Islamic religion to the religion of global warming.
thats a very rural county thats just a few miles from me. For some of these rural counties the two main industries are dealing in illicit medicaid/care drugs and law enforcement/corrections.
Um, we’re allowed to carry our firearms into the bar with us. Can you do that in your neck ‘o the woods? BTW, what about the current federal court system are you mistaking for ‘Justice’?
Well, if the jackass in charge decides to build a new prison for them, spend all that money and hire people to babysit these guys AND have a shoot-first policy on anyone found on the wire then hell, they can build it here if they want.
I don’t want to see them do it, but if the idiots are hell-bent on making it happen then they can spend their money locally for all I care, as long as they don’t mix these prisoners in with any others.
Bad policy, and a waste, but it would be a big shot in the arm for the community who gets it. Sometimes being a realist stinks I know, but found money and all...
Idiot.
Plenty of room also at the Silky Pony Ranch in N. Carolina.
Plus free Breck shampoo to keeps the rags on heads clean and bouncy fresh.
isn’t that the same prison that James Earl Ray escaped from back in the 80’s? If so, do we really wand Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in there?
Not a damn thing from them yankees friend. Just saying, we don't care to pay the kings taxes on whisky or Washin’ton carpetbaggers messing with our lives. And i can't carry into a bar unless they do 51% of their business on food and if I do I can't drink. Legally that is...
That is my back yard, and I am not worried about it one bit. The thing that worries me is when the ACLU gets involved, and gets these suckers USC protection. Then we will have problems.
Just wunnerful...when the foreign inmates escape Gen. Patraeus can then mount a Smokey Mountain surge to oust the Appalachian Talibani insurgents!
We won’t need no stinkin’ army, we’ll ping ‘em our selfs. Amazin’ what ya shoot when out huntin’ squirrels on a crisp Fall mornin’.
You try to escape from Brushy Mountain, you better be able to live in the hills for a month with rattlesnakes, boars, bears, and wildcats. It is a brutal terrain. If you escape the animals and elements, you have to deal with cousin Jethro who may think you have a pretty mouth.
That's a real secure facility. James Earl Ray is just one of many who walked away from there.
Explain who is going to be paying the people in the jobs while the detainees are in their prison?
How does this generate money?
The Federal Government or the State Government will have to pay the bills.
If something doesn’t GENERATE money it’s going to be paid for by INCREASED TAXES.
The one facility in the U.S. I would favor for Gitmo inmates would be the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada.
since so many TN folks are on this thread, please allow me a slight hijack and ask if anyone is planning to attend the D.C. event Sept 12. I’d like to go, but have no interest in driving alone. I’m also not so keen on shelling out DC hotel prices.
Well personally I don't think it's a good idea. True Brushy Mountain and the New River area is some of the most rugged land in the state. Also true is the fact we have been chasing bin Laden and the Taliban through mountains for how many years now? Brushy Mountain though at one time was a maximum security prison is escapable and there is a way out of there besides over the mountain by going through Petros. The man who shot the prison guard in Kingston while awaiting trial was from Brushy.
Brushy would also make Oak Ridge a terrorist focal point. Bad idea dreamed up my a county commissioner looking at dollar signs and not common sense.
Bush screw up by not holding MILITARY TRIBUNALS and having sentences {executions} carried out.
