On the surface, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's visits to Auburn and Long Island this weekend are nonpolitical.
She'll participate in Auburn's first Founders Day celebration on Saturday. The event is tied to the 50th anniversary of Alaskan statehood. The following day, she'll be on Long Island to raise money for Independent Group Home Living, an agency for the developmentally disabled.
But after exploding on the national political scene last summer as John McCain's vice presidential running mate on the Republican ticket, Palin is also one of the party's leading figures, and any trip has political implications.
"The next campaign begins the day after the last campaign ends," SUNY Cortland political science professor Robert Spitzer said.
The GOP defeat in November opened the door for new leaders to emerge, he said.
"I think there is a vacuum in the Republican Party," Spitzer said, "and she's very ambitious. I don't mean that as criticism. I just mean that we learned during the 2008 campaign that she had an idea of higher elective office before she was selected as McCain's vice presidential running mate."

of course it is political. She is a (shrewd) politician with national office potential. The problem is pravda not depicting all politicians equally in this context. ALL politicians deserve this kind of cynical treatment, actually worse, imho.
I agree. She must treat every single activity as being perceived as a political event.
GO SARAH GO!

Typical of the Sub-Standard, as my father calls it.
The great thing is that the media has already tried to destroy Sarah & if she does run for another big political office they’re not going to have much left to fire at her.
She’ll be a formidable candidate.
The Governor NEVER said "I can see Russia from my house", but thanks to SNL and NBC people think it's true.
3 Senators in NY are undecided on this week’s “gay marriage” vote. here they are, send a polite note now!!!!
However, if Sarah so happened to be a Democrat it wouldn’t be considered political.
This weekend, Gov. Palin’s helping to raise funds for the Seward House in Auburn, Autism and Independent Group Home Living, yet when she was in Evansville (also a fundraiser) she turned down the chance to hold a SarahPAC fundraiser arranged by the local GOP. That says a lot about her right there.
