I had thought that the "original" Hummer, the H1, was still manufactured by AM General, and then sold by GM. IIRC, the H2 and H3 were pretty much standard GMC SUVs with a different body style. And I had heard THAT was what GM sold. But the H1 was pretty darned close to the military vehicle, complete with all the cool mechanical stuff, like inboard disc brakes and planetary reduction gear in the hubs.
