Usually that means a bomb.

It's certainly possible. But I would think that an intentional bombing isn't going to be left waiting until it had already been in flight for a few hours. One would think it would tend to be set off early in the flight, bringing it down over land instead of out in the middle of the ocean. But of course, lots of things are possible.

It would also tend, I think, to just be a single abrupt event... then nothing follows... not a string of cascading system failures. This suggests to me that the cause was something other than a bomb.

what if someone knew how one or two small charges could cause a cascading sequence that would cause catastrophic failure?

It's just a nice coinky-dink that it happened over water. Very hard to find anything in deep turbulent water. Even the American aircraft with the center fuel tank accident happened close to shore enough where it could be recovered. If it had happened 1 or 2 hours later, very difficult recovery.

I hate flying anymore. My fear is based on irrational "feelings" but every time one of these big planes goes down I think of all the children left behind. Just a sad thing. God rest their souls and comfort their families.

Richard Reid didn't try to blow up AA63 until well into the flight, shortly after meals were served.

Also, Operation: Bojinka called for blowing up all 12 aircraft over the Pacific, basically in mid-flight.

Do you you remember Pan Am 103? I thought that one, the bomb was intended to go off over the ocean, but because of some change in the flight plan it ended up going off over Scotland. And the Air India, it went off over the ocean. Either there was a bomb or some kind of altercation on the plane. If this was turbulence, I think Airbus has some design flaws, like being too nuanced with turbulence. Remeber the Airbus that crashed in NY a few days after 9/11? They chalked that up to turbulence and blamed it on the pilot’s response to it; tore the tail section cleannnn off. Just turbulence folks. They wanted to get the planes back in the air and this time Bonehead was in Egypt schmoozing with the muzzies; don’t want to talk about terrorism just now.
