WASHINGTON (AFP) Republican Senator John McCain on Wednesday joined his former rival President Barack Obama in calling for a nuclear-free world, a goal previously formulated by former president Ronald Reagan.
During a lengthy speech on the Senate floor marking the unveiling of a statue of Reagan in the Capitol, the veteran Arizona lawmaker recalled how his "personal hero" had dreamed of a world free of nuclear weapons.
"That is my dream too," McCain said.
"This is a distant and difficult goal. And we must proceed toward it prudently and pragmatically, and with a focused concern for our security and the security of allies who depend on us."
. . . . .
Obama welcomed McCain's comments.
"I have outlined an ambitious strategy for promoting arms control and preventing nuclear terrorism and proliferation, which is already bearing fruit," the president said in statement.
"I look forward to working with Senator McCain and the entire Congress to ensure that we accomplish these goals together for the American people and the security of the entire planet."

Just that expressing a desire to have one is not the issue. Politicians should be realists with grownup policy positions. It makes no difference that a desire for a nuclear-free world is good as long that desire can never be realistically obtained. For supposedly serious politicians to spout fantasies and be taken seriously is the mark of something seriously wrong with the political system.

Well, I can see the plastic-banana, good-time, rock & roll, obama saying that, being the leftover radical hippie that he is, but John McCain is way old enough to know better than to engage in these 5th grade "I wish" games with nuclear weapons.
They are both setting the USA up for a nuclear sucker punch of an unimagineable outcome.
Fools never learn. Someone should ask the kenyan if saul alinsky had a "rule" for the aftermath of a nuclear explosion.
Here we have Iran and North Korea just dying to get their hands on nukes, both of which dearly hate the United States, and "laurel and hardy" wants to put daisys in our hair and sway to the strains of "kum ba ya".
God...please let us know how much longer this madness must continue....amen.

McCain betrays those who very, very reluctantly voted for him for POTUS because they knew Obama would be a 21st century Neville Chamberlain.

Nuclear weapons have been the greatest gift to peace in the history of the planet.
I guess McCain wants perpetual war.
