EL PASO, Texas A 37-year-old Mexican man recently shot to death in front of an El Paso house has been identified as a midlevel official in the Juarez drug cartel, police said Wednesday.
Jose Daniel Gonzalez Galeana, 37, was shot and killed in east El Paso on May 15.
Officer Chris Mears said Wednesday that police have now identified Gonzalez as a lieutenant of the Juarez cartel, a criminal gang believed responsible for countless killings in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, across the Rio Grande from El Paso.
Police said they believe a man armed with a handgun approached him in the street and shot him.
No arrests have been made.
"We don't think it's random," Mears said. "We think his murder had something to do with his being involved in the Juarez drug cartel."
The Gonzalez killing was El Paso's third homicide in 2009, compared to several hundred in Juarez, just over the river.
Mears said Gonzalez, a Mexican citizen who was scheduled to stand trial in a drunken driving case in El Paso later this year, was in the United States legally when he was shot.
The Juarez cartel has been in a protracted fight with rival gangs and Mexican federal troops since last year, when more than 1,600 people were killed in Juarez, a sprawling city of more than 1.5 million people.

Is that show worth watching? I’m waiting for Mad Men’s season three to start.
I really enjoy it. Cranston does a great job. This role will define his career, IMO. Definitely worth watching.
LOL drug cartels have “officials” now?
I wonder if he could see Rosa’s Cantina below?
Everyone has officials. Haven’t you seen what we have in Washington DC these days?? Many, many officials; not too smart, but very official. :-)
Even cartel lieutenants come to the US to hide out!
