Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, dealt the most serious blow to the Prime Ministers authority. It emerged that she will step down from the Cabinet when Mr Brown reshuffles his team after what Labour fears will be its worst performance at the polls for a generation.
She had been under pressure for weeks over expenses claims made by her husband on her behalf, including for two pornographic films. However, the public disclosure of her departure before tomorrows elections threw Mr Browns reshuffle off course.
Sources close to Downing Street suggested that Miss Smiths decision only became public after it was leaked by friends of Hazel Blears, the Communities Secretary, who was criticised by Mr Brown over her expenses claims.
On a tumultuous and chaotic day at Downing Street, it was also announced that Beverley Hughes would move aside from her job as Childrens Minister and not stand at the next election and that Tom Watson, the Cabinet Office Minister and key ally of Mr Brown, would leave the Government.
With speculation intensifying that Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, will become the most high-profile victim of the reshuffle, and that David Miliband might also be replaced as Foreign Secretary, it raised the prospect that the three great offices of state could change hands.

Too bad for Obama’s bro.
Maybe Michael Savage will send her some flowers. LOL
The UK Telegraph is awesome. The only honest and objective newspaper in the English speaking world along with Investors Business Daily. The Telegraph goes after the corrupt scum in the UK Parliment and Hussein. Our Congress is even more corrupt than Parliment.
Too bad not one large paper in America has the Telegraph’s courage.
By and large, you’re correct, however, the WSJ editorial page is good, as is the Waterbury Republican-American, along with Investor’s Business Daily. The Orange County Register is also good. However, those media outlets are in the minority.
The WSJ is too liberal for me anymore and they love illegal aliens. I will not be renewing my subscription after almost two decades.
Ditto Forbes who has a column with one of O’s closest closest supporters who backed him in Chicago and lost 50%+ last year in his mutual funds. Forbes is too liberal anymore and the writing is weak. Another one I had a sub for 20+ years.
“The WSJ is too liberal for me anymore and they love illegal aliens. I will not be renewing my subscription after almost two decades.”
The WSJ has always been an elite Countryclub Republican paper.
LOL
What if they dump Gordon Brown, and appoint someone who regains popularity for Labour, thereby staving off an electorial victory for the Conservatives?
Brits re-elect Labour at their own peril.
Sure, but when has that ever stopped them?
Oh, I’m not saying it will.
But together I think the Tories and UKIP will eat Labour’s lunch.
Hopefully. However Gordon Brown is an anchor around Labour’s neck. I don’t want him replaced with someone more popular - yes, I know I’m being ultra-cynical.
But of course!
