Women's Health Care Services, the clinic run by slain abortion provider George Tiller, will resume operations next Monday, a physician who worked with Tiller said Monday.
The clinic at 5107 E. Kellogg will remain closed the rest of this week so staff members and family can mourn Tiller's death, said LeRoy Carhart, a Nebraska physician who has come to Tiller's clinic on a rotating basis for more than 10 years.
"What people need to know is... the women's services that we provided for 30 years are not going to change," Carhart said. "The same abortion services will remain available in Wichita."
Tiller, 67, was shot to death just after 10 a.m. Sunday in the foyer of Reformation Lutheran Church, where he was serving as an usher.
Scott Roeder, 51, of Merriam, has been arrested in connection with the shooting, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. He remains at the Sedgwick County Jail pending the formal filing of charges.
Carhart said he drove to Wichita on Sunday night. He met with clinic employees and Tiller's wife and daughters Monday morning.
"It was a really, really good meeting," Carhart said. "It was a chance to go over all the important things and the good things George had done for each of us, and ways that we could appreciate all that he's done for the community and the women of this country.
"His daughters and his wife are doing far better than I would be doing if I just lost my life partner or my mother or father," he said.
Patients who had appointments this week have been notified of the clinic's closing, and other arrangements for their care have been made, Carhart said.
"Starting next Monday we should be back to 100 percent," he said.
Carhart said he and two other out-of-state doctors have been rotating weekly shifts at the clinic, and that will continue.
The two other doctors are licensed to practice medicine in the state of Kansas and have no complaints against them, said Kristi Pankratz, a spokeswoman for the state Board of Healing Arts.
Wichita police have stepped up patrols at the clinic on East Kellogg, said Daryl Ingermanson, chief deputy for the U.S. Marshal's Kansas district. But no U.S. marshals have been assigned to guard Tiller's clinic, he said.
"At this point, we haven't been directed to," Ingermanson said.
Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday ordered increased security for some abortion clinics and doctors in the wake of Tiller's slaying.
Jeff Carter, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service, confirmed the decision "to increase security for a number of individuals and facilities" but would not disclose further details.
Tiller's clinic has been bombed, blockaded and vandalized at various times over the past two decades.
A staff member reported severe vandalism to the clinic to authorities May 2, and a letter threatening Tiller's life was reported May 4.
Authorities on Monday did not respond to inquiries about whether the suspect in custody is linked to the threatening letter.
Bridget Patton, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Kansas City, Mo., said she could neither confirm nor deny that the suspect arrested in connection with Tiller's death had been on any kind of an agency watch list.
"We do have an open investigation into the vandalism at that clinic," Patton said.
I just wanted to point out that initial coverage used the word "murder." Now it's "slaying." What's next?
At least they won’t seek the death penalty (cruel and unusual) for Tillers slayer.
'Slaying' is appropriate for killing in large numbers as well as individually. That's why it's interesting to me. Murder is commonly used for individual killings or in small numbers.
That makes 'slaying' kinda ironic. It could well be used to describe Tiller even more so than his killer.
If a Texan Scott Roeder shoots and kills a burglar exiting a neighbor’s house, is this an unGodly murder?
If the policeman Scott Roeder shoots and kills a man who is in the process of killing others, is this an unGodly murder?
If the soilder Scott Roeder shoots and kills a German soilder under orders from Dwight Eisenhowerser or FDR, is this an unGodly murder?
If Scott Roeder had killed George Tiller while Tiller had the foreceps inside a living baby’s skull, would this have been an unGodly murder?
If Scott Roeder had killed Osama bin Laden while bin Laden was passing around the collection plate for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Islam, would this have been unGodly murder?
Maybe living with a mass murderer isn't all it's cracked up to be. Than man murdered infants for money.
Sebelius is out of the picture now, as part of the Obama administration. I am hopeful that the clinic will wane away.
Tiller was ‘all in’. He had been bribing public officials for years. Conversely, Sebelius knew that if she failed to perform for Tiller, he would take her down with him...so they both played a high stakes game. He actually bought himself out of criminal prosecution in the wide open.
Now, will any new public official want to get so wrapped up in the clinic, with a new guy? I doubt it. The new governor is Mark Parkinson. A turncoat democrat, who just a few years ago was the head of the Kansas republican party. I don’t see him getting wrapped up in this. He has even declared that he won’t run for re-election...which makes him hard to buy. The current AG is a lackey, chosen by Sebelius (the previous AG who was elected, using Tiller cash, left in a sex scandal) who certainly won’t prosecute any Tiller successor...but when new elections come around, I full expect Phil Kline to run again.
To put it bluntly, I don’t think any new doctor, or any current politician will have the stomach for blatantly violating the law anymore.
Yes, if that burgler wasn't a threat.
If the policeman Scott Roeder shoots and kills a man who is in the process of killing others, is this an unGodly murder?
No. He's protecting the life of others.
If the soilder Scott Roeder shoots and kills a German soilder under orders from Dwight Eisenhowerser or FDR, is this an unGodly murder?
No, that was one of the points I made.
If Scott Roeder had killed George Tiller while Tiller had the foreceps inside a living babys skull, would this have been an unGodly murder?
Unfortunately, yes in the law's eyes. In God's eyes I believe it's another matter (see your second point).
If Scott Roeder had killed Osama bin Laden while bin Laden was passing around the collection plate for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Islam, would this have been unGodly murder?
Yes. Osama bin Laden, while a fugitive from American justice, was not engaged in any life-threatening action at the time. The proper course would be to see that he's taken into custody.
I still believe in a nation of laws, for what it's worth today. And in America it's criminal to kill someone without sufficient reason; regardless of who or what that person is. That's the rule of law. And that's what we conservatives preach every day. We talk the talk, we have to walk the walk.
You're right. However, the word "slaying" doesn't have the same impact the word murder does in the average person's consciousness. It's liberal brainwashing at its finest.
When Average Joe, sitting in his recliner with his ice-cold beer and the remote in his hand, hears the word "murder" he pays a little more attention than if he hears the word "slaying." My guess is that the pro-aborts are seeing how all that coverage is backfiring on their hero, so they are backpeddling to win the war in words.
From what I can tell, Average Joe is not sympathetic to George Tiller. In his heart, he's thinking the guy got what was coming to him and changes the channel.
In my opinion, Tiller was on the same level as Mengele.
In my opinion, Tiller was on the same level as Mengele.
I see where you're going with this. But the media is up in arms over this killing yet nothing is being said about the murder at the recruiting office. It's hard for me to see the media backing off on verbiage yet going all out to condemn the act. No, I think this is merely one journalist's choice of words.
Maybe one of the babies NOT KILLED this week will grow up to be President someday. What the country will be like or be called by then is anyone’s guess, but I’m bettin nobama and his scummy lib friends will be done with in 4, maybe 6 years tops (depending on how many freedoms the HNIC tries to take from us).
Just hope there are plenty of good strong lamp posts around to hold all these socialist tyrants and assistants.
No argument. However, in our convoluted world, what Tiller did is protected by law. What And that makes it even the more heinous.
What one journalist writes, the others pick up.
I know what they're doing, and it's laughable. I used to work for the media years ago...way back when they actually reported the truth. They are lemmings now.
My office doesn’t close for a week when someone dies.
Imagine if they closed down a week everytime someone died at the clinic.
There are women who are being actively stalked by violent men, who have COURT ORDERS protecting them, but for whom the police cannot provide protection.
Many times, we read of these women being killed by the men who were threatening them, and the police say “sorry”.
So, if there are U.S. marshalls just sitting around doing nothing (and if so, why didn’t we fire them), wouldn’t it be better to assign them to women who are in actual danger, rather than wasting them on abortion clinics?
On the other hand, Obama has to “do something”, after all he has only been in office 5 months and he’s already had TWO terrorist attacks on U.S. Soil, one of which actually targeted our military operations.
Yes he did. I think his demise is all-too-convenient. He had the goods on them all, and it wouldn't take much to convince some hot-head nut who already hates him, to take him out.
To me, this looks more like a hit--the FBI knew about Roeder and stood back and just let it happen. The politicians stand to gain more from his death than anybody. Dead men tell no tales.
Now Roeder will be summarily executed by the State to keep him from talking. They don't want him to turn into the Pro-Life Mumia. Watch.
