Romney: Earlier GM bankruptcy would have saved billions for taxpayers
The Boston Globe ^ | June 1, 2009 | Joseph Williams

WASHINGTON -- Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, whose father was an auto executive during the industry's post-World War II heyday, today called GM's bankruptcy "a sad day" for the nation as well as "a son of Detroit" like himself.

Romney, who made millions as a venture capitalist and whose business acumen helped rescue the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002, also offered an "I told you so" to the Bush and Obama administrations, blaming both for wasting "billions upon billions" of taxpayer dollars trying to save the nation's largest auto manufacturer.

Rather than spend vast sums to keep it afloat, Romney said, the White House under Bush should have followed his prescription from last year's GOP primaries and pointed GM to bankruptcy court, which would have saved money and put the corporation back on the road to recovery much sooner.

A real tragedy. I just hope the UAW and Obama do not destroy Ford next and they will try.

Thank you so much, Republicans, for picking John McCain over Mitt Romney because you don’t like Mormons. You did great! </sarcasm>

GM and Chrysler are answering the question of whether anybody was ‘too big to go bankrupt’ back in September of last year. George W. Bush should have told Lefty Paulson to GF himself.

I thought they should have declared bankruptcy..we all did.

Maybe I have missed a quote that Mitt thought they should...in the beginning.

Captain Obvious takes a strong stand after focus groups and polls tell him what he should say.

We know you hate Romney. That's okay. Now find some happiness in your life. I can't even imagine letting that much negativity run ones’s life as you seemingly do. My prayers are w/ ya brotha.

What is it about Romney supporters that brings out the "Red Herring" response of accusing others of being "Haters" when they either present proof that Romney is not who he says he is (a Conservative) or just make a statement that he isn't what he says he is?

There has been way too much verifiable historical proof of Romney's unstable ways with regards to the multiple positions he has taken on the issues and his rather deplorable past when it comes to issues near and dear to conservatives for this type of crap to be flung at actual conservative pointing out the truth.

Yeah. Letting GM go bankrupt would have saved us millions.

Real conservative candidates to vote for in 2008 would have saved us TRILLIONS.

Yes, he would of. Lots of posters on this board trash him and call him a RINO, but I believe he was the best GOP candidate for president in the last election. I could see all the economic problems this nation was facing and already having, and Romney was a great republican choice for these times.

Yea, he was so great on the financial issues that he whole-heartedly supported the bailouts.

He was so great on the financial issue that he fathered a socialist health-care initiative while governor of Massachusetts whose costs have spiraled out of control.

Instead we have a communityorganizer/lawyer/marxist whose been handed everything on a silver platter via affirmative action and doesn’t know jack about even running a business or corporation. His solution to this economic mess is to increase the budget deficit from 1 trillion to 3 trillion, cap and trade, and more bailouts. God help us.

And don't forget BO's neophyte 31 year old "almost a law grad student graduate" that is now in command of Government Motors! What a complete joke!!

What Romney couldn’t teach these fools about business. Of course, this is a command & control economy crowd, not a free market crowd, so where to start? I weep for America’s youth.

His “saving” of the Olympics brought him millions in campaign bucks.

He promised not to take any money from the committee, but did.

And from his position as saviour of the Olympics made dozens of contacts for money.

He's pretty smart.

Slick, some would say.

You don’t usually hear it put in such a civil way in some of the discussions. The level of vituperation is a bit alarming from some quarters.

The document has been removed, Post.
Try this

OpEd NY Slimes, um, Times (No wonder so many here missed it :) November 18, 2008.

Say what you will, Romney was right. (Giggle. Of course, I mean "right" in the sense of "correct") But, to this "Daughter of Detroit" IMHO, his comments are and were, spot on.

Too bad he wasn't elected. The media would have had a field day with the eeeevil Republicans actually allowing GM to go into bankruptcy.

Of course, this is simply wild speculation.

I was saying that from the start. Mr. Universal Healthcare is really late to this party

Not true. He's been saying the same thing about GM since last fall.

“Romney: Earlier GM bankruptcy would have saved billions for taxpayers

Conservatives: NOT passing socialized medicine in MA would have saved tens of billions for taxpayers!
