Fly by wire is not less safe. It is usually quad redundant, shielded wires delivering electrical impulses to command hydraulic servoactuators. Very safe with good inspection schedules.
Wow. These explanations are waaay above my understanding. I usually just ask my dh, but he’s away at another conference at the moment. He’s flown military jets and quite a few corporate-type & commercial passenger a/c. But I know that he’s happiest when he has the most human control options built into his a/c. Like back during the millennium, when no one knew what exactly was going to happen to a/c computer systems...he was very happy to be flying the 727.
And people who don't trust it better figure on quitting commercial flights eventually.
Probably right about fly by wire in general, but it’s the Boeing philosophy that the pilot can always disengage the computers and have final authority that makes them safer in my opinion.
Remember the airbus that hit the mountains in Germany? They could have pulled out if the computer had let them overstress the airplane. Better to crack the wing spars and miss the mountain I say, but that’s just me.....
I cannot imagine NOT going ‘fly by wire’ these days.
The weight of hydraulics throughout the plane to the flight controls would be incredible.
