Fear over being called racist not only paralyzed the entire Republican Party but also the mainstream press and opposition in the Democratic Party in the last election cycle and it's threatening to paralyze opposition to Sotomayor now. So wether it's real or an invention is irrelevant. The political power that claims of racism have, especially in paralyzing and defeating conservatives, is very real and needs to be taken seriously.
