GOP Sees Opportunity in NJ Governor's Race
Washington Post ^ | 05/17/09 | Keith B. Richburg

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Dispirited Republicans, hoping to prove the Grand Old Party is not yet extinct in the Northeast, have placed their final hopes this year on the governor's race in New Jersey, where Gov. Jon S. Corzine (D) has seen his approval ratings plummet as fast as the state's financial picture.

But in an echo of the party's national internal debate, New Jersey Republicans aren't certain whether their best chance for success is with a candidate who can appeal to independents or with a staunch conservative who advocates a flat tax, would ban abortion and expresses disdain for moderates.

For anyone who doubts that Chris Christie has NEVER had a plan for New Jersey:

For any one who believes that a candidate should hold himself accountable to his own campaign promise, listen to Christie's 101.5 radio interview this morning:

I’ll vote for Lonegan, but if Christie wins the nomination anyone agitating against voting for him then should go to hell.

I’d rather have Lonegan, but Christie was our only protection against these corrupt bloodsucking democrats and I don’t want to see him turned into a goat here. Corzine is THE enemy.

Well put. I hope the GOP voters (and out-of-state pundits) follow your advice.

One step at a time. Let’s get the candidate we truly want elected first. We don’t need to go down that moderate road with Christie.

Corzine’s defeat will be assured in any case. New Jersey has had it with him.

Here is my prediction:

1. Corzine is going to quit mid-campaign. The polls will look bad in August and he will quit just before the required date avoiding the Torricelli/NJ Supreme Court issue.

2. Frank Lautenburg will resign from the Senate. Corzine will appoint himself.

3. Dick Codey will once again be Governor. He will want to campaign in Corzine’s place but will not have Corzine’s backing.

4. Corzine will back Cory Booker who will sweep into the Governor’s office in a landslide.

God help us all.

My impression is that Chris Christie is an empty suit with a taste for gutter politics.

Steve Lonegan’s anti-abortion absolutism would make it difficult for him to win an election even in the Dakotas or Wyoming. In New Jersey he has only a small chance against the likes of Jon Corzine.

It’s an unhappy choice for New Jersey Republicans. I really want to vote for Brett Schundler ( who is backing Christie ) again. Perhaps Brett has been promised Lautenberg’s Senate seat when the old man finally goes.

Sadly, that scenario could very well play out in NJ.

Your scenario is scary, yes, God help us if Christie is the nominee. We need to continue the movement for Steve Lonegan, and get him through the primary. Can you imagine how bad the loss would be with Christie as the opponent? Lonegan would be an absolute clear choice in that case.

Yeah Booker was educated in my town. He’s got some huge fund-raiser going on sometime soon.

Giving Christie his due, he did an excellant job (dispite missing several notable big fish) with his prosecutions. That being said, he is lock step with the N.J. Republican Party and as such, a Democrat Lite. With 4 Supreme Court seats opening up, we can count on him to follow the N.J. standard practice and make them non-qualified political payments to people who have never read the State Constitution.

I’ve been reading that headline about New Jersey for years now. Republicans always “see hope” there and it doesn’t materialize.

Vote Lenegan.

Christie is another baseless mudlsinger that has done NOTHING to “change” the corrupt politics in NJ. I challenge you, what has Christie done in Trenton in ALL THE YEARS HE HAS BEEN THERE?

NOTHING!

Vote Lonegan.

“Steve Lonegan’s anti-abortion absolutism would make it difficult for him to win an election. . . “

Recent gallup polling shows that for the first time in forever, more Americans are Pro-life than pro-choice. NJ will come around as well. Just a matter of time.

We haven’t run a truly conservative candidate since I can remember. That’s why.
Now is our chance to support one in Steve Lonegan. We can’t be scared away from our principles, even without the help of the NJ GOP.

No thanks.

I don't vote for baby killers or liars.

Christie is both.

He's LONG been part of the corrupt machine in Trenton.

He needs to go!

Vote Lonegan.

Christie is another Christy Whitman - another shell game RHINO. I'm SICK OF THEM.

You should see ALL THE LONEGAN signs where I live. Christie is SHUNNED along with Corzine. As far as Corzine and Christie IGNORING Lonegan - people are on to that too. They are turned off. Trying to shut down debate between a RHINO, Christie, and a REAL conervative, Lonegan has only angered CONSERVATIVES more. This shows how under handed Christie is and how HAPPY Corzine is to not hear how ineffective he is - in fact both Christie and Corzine couldn't be more ineffective if they tried. It's an old LOW DOWN tactic that is NOT working any more. It's HELPED Lonegan. Corzine is very happy about this because Christie is just like him and minimizes the differences. People are NOT fooled.

Go to hell Christie and take your dam RHINO’s with you.

“I challenge you, what has Christie done in Trenton in ALL THE YEARS HE HAS BEEN THERE? NOTHING!”

Is this humor? Christie’s office as US Attorney was of course in Newark, not Trenton.

Being US attorney in New Jersey is like being a fisherman at a fish farm. There are so many corrupt politicians in New Jersey, you just have to decide which ones to prosecute.

“Is this humor? Christie’s office as US Attorney was of course in Newark, not Trenton.”

Frankly, I don’t care if he was in Patterson.

“Being US attorney in New Jersey is like being a fisherman at a fish farm. There are so many corrupt politicians in New Jersey, you just have to decide which ones to prosecute.”

Surely you jest that Christie is NOT corrupt.

WHAT HAS CHRISTIE DONE?

You still haven’t answered the question?

I’ll help you out. NOTHING.

He is as CORRUPT as they are and WHY he has been there for YEARS. He’s ONE OF THEM. OPEN YOU EYES.

I can’t tell you how UNIMPRESSED I am that capital punishment WAS on the books and NOT used and NOW with Christies help - NJ is NO LONGER A CAPITAL PUNISHMENT STATE.

Get REAL!

Stop voting in the CORRUPT, LYING RHINOS.

I’m sick of them and those that PROMOTE RHINOS.

Enough is enough.

You must be confusing me with another poster. . . I am not only voting for Lonegan, but have been working my tail off for him since before he announced. If you had gone to the links I posted you would have seen that. Lonegan is the cure for the RINO Virus.
