SACRAMENTO For the third time in as many weeks Friday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is slashing state programs by billions of dollars to wipe out a deficit that seems to be growing by the day.
The cuts would eliminate in-home nursing for all but the neediest patients, such as those who can't breathe or walk on their own. The proposal would grab $550 million from counties that's currently used to provide social services for the poor. And it would cut funding for schools and community colleges by an additional $680 million, bringing the total education cuts Schwarzenegger has suggested to more than $6 billion.
The plan would also cut the salaries of 230,000 state workers by 5 percent on top of the two days per month of unpaid furloughs they're already being forced to take, the equivalent of a roughly 9 percent pay cut for a savings of $470 million.
Schwarzenegger's finance team outlined the $2.8 billion in additional cuts this morning in response to a projection from the state's legislative budget analyst that the deficit had grown by slightly more than that amount in recent weeks. ...
If the state were a private company, it would be staring at bankruptcy, said Finance Director Mike Genest. But that's not an option, he said, so California will have no choice but to hack away at services to the most state's most vulnerable people, from school children to seniors to the indigent.

Send the ILLEGALS home !!!
Finally, he’s doing what he should have done years ago.
Ummm, if I’m not mistaken, the recent vote was a clear indication that this is exactly what the voters want. For the government to cut spending.
Their contrast (that because “bankruptcy” is not possible they have to slash services) is stupid, as a company facing bankruptcy would have done the same slashing long ago to avoid it.
It should be an eye-opener to Californians, watching this daily parade of programs they didn’t know existed being slashed because california doesn’t have enough money to pay for them.
Maybe enough of them will figure out that they really weren’t getting their money’s worth.
It amazes me how these people think they are doing us a favor. GET EFFING RID OF THEM!! ALL OF THEM!!!
Arnie should have started slashing the state budget when he got elected the first time.. but no, He chose to continue the spending patterns of his predecessor- even if with slightly less gusto.
There are so many ways California could fix their budget woes - and probably come out far better in the end for it - but none of the left-coast idiots will stand for them.
I still say we need to deed over California to Mexico. The US would be better for it in the end.
At some point either you balance your budget or your world caves in. Californians can’t seem to understand that principle. You can do it on terms you choose, or wait and watch the bottom fall out and the roof come down.
The Gov really needs to do what all businesses do in the same financial situation...cut staff. Big cuts.
Send the illegals home and fire the state workers.
Hmmm maybe if they did this in the first place...
It appears that at least some of these “drastic moves” are what should have been done long ago to avert CA’s present belly-up financial position.
I’ll bet that he could make up a lot of it on the revenue side by arranging some leases for offshore drilling off the Santa Barbara coast. I’m amazed this hasn’t even been mentioned yet.
The Dutch boy is a little late in putting his finger in the leak!! NUFSAID
Funny - seems like he knew all along what needed to be done.
No, no, Arnie, look how much city water purification systems, garbage removal, and childrens hospital burn units cost! My God, man, cut those out and you’ll balance the budget by next week!
He’s slashing programs that shouldn’t be cut just to teach the voters a lesson. There isn’t a voter that voted to cut in-home healthcare, alzheimers care, closing of large parks, ect. The large parks like Sequoia bring in revenue.
I’d start with cutting all services for illegals.
Wow, that plus cutting off all illegal alien programs and subsidies would do it, easily - no joke.
