Sen. Chuck Schumer called Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor a "moderate" and added President Obama did not choose a "far-out liberal." Schumer said it would be hard for a member of either party to oppose her confirmation and warned Republicans to oppose her at their peril.

The Democrats' preemptive intimidation, threats and accusations have started already.

See how it works? Republicans beg Democrats for a fair hearing for their judicial nominees.

Democrats tell Republicans they dare not even think about asking tough questions of their nominees, much less voting against them, or else.

"Or else" meaning: we'll call you a racistsexistbigothomophobefascistrightwinghatemonger on every TV network except for FOX, where we'll call you that, too, but also suggest the anchor or show host is one, too.

I would turn it around, do not oppose the radical liberal nominee at your own risk.

“Schumer...self-serving promotion...”

You have pegged him perfectly. To my way of thinking, Schumer is the single most detestable member of the senate, and there is no shortage of those.

By the way, the liberals secret phrase for this kooks brand of jurisprudence is "legal realism" -- So says a lawyer friend who emailed me.

Only under the loosest definition. What she appears to be from her opinions and editorial spew is a Critical Race Studies adherent.

Although Ginsburg was nominated after Bork, it was before the threat to filibuster judges became commonplace for the Democrats when GWB was president. This had NEVER been done in the case of a nominee to the US Supreme Court. The custom in the “congenial” Senate had been to let the POTUS have his nominees, as long as they were qualified. Scalia was confirmed by a similar majority. Those days are long past! Though the Republicans were not responsible for it, they should take this opportunity to expose Obama for who he is. He has just shown his true colors through his nomination of an activist judge.

What Americans need to learn is her scurrilous doings against the New Haven firefighters who took a “racially neutral” test and passed it for their promotions. The test was thrown out after no Blacks passed. Nineteen white firefighters and one Hispanic sued, they passed the test and wanted their earned benefits. Sotomayor threw them out of the court room and tried to bury their chances for appeal. It is completely unfair and exposes the ugliness of leftist judicial activism. If we want to live in a world where our childrens’ accomplishments are rejected due to their racial makeup or other leftist political sensibilities then Obama is your man.

“All four of her opinions were overturned.”

Excellent. I am looking forward to watching these confirmation hearings on tv. I only hope the Repubs have the cojones to pick apart her position and reasoning on these 4 opinions of hers......nailing her with the touchy-feely approach to legal opinions instead of strict legal interpretation

Wouldn't it be fun to put a huge thick sheet of plexiglass between Chucky and a Camera?

A better question might be: how many people did Schmucky knock down in his rush to jump in front of the cameras?

Sotomayor has been recommended for the Supreme Court by Nan Aron of the very liberal Alliance for Justice, who stated in a 2004 memo to the Senate Judiciary Committee that Sotomayor had “been through an initial vetting and fit into the criteria that we believe should be the
standard for any Supreme Court justice.”

******

The President of Alliance for Justice (AFJ), Nan Aron is a lawyer who began her professional career as a trial attorney for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, litigating cases against companies accused of racial and sexual discrimination. In 1979 she left litigation to establish AFJ. Six years later she launched AFJ’s Judicial Selection Project, which systematically opposes Republican judicial appointments because it considers their political views too conservative.

Aron’s first major victory with AFJ occurred when she helped scuttle President Reagan’s 1987 nomination of Judge Robert Bork for the U.S. Supreme Court. The day after the Bork nomination had been announced, Aron and AFJ representatives held closed-door strategy meetings with Democratic Senators on the Judiciary Committee. “We’re in triple gear,” said Aron, exhorting the American Bar Association to label Bork an extremist figure of the radical right who was unqualified to sit on the Court. Since then, Aron and AFJ have consistently opposed Republican appointments to the federal judiciary, including most recently John Roberts and Samuel Alito. This pattern stands in contradiction to Aron’s 1999 assertion, made during the Clinton administration, that the President of the United States “has a duty to fill judicial vacancies and appoint jurists who share his views.”

In 2002, for example, SAC presented a documentary titled The Threat to America’s Freedoms, which focused on alleged civil liberties violations related to the war on terror; the film featured such luminaries as actress Susan Sarandon and radical historian Howard Zinn.

In 2000, Aron established Co-Motion, an anti-gun-ownership initiative consisting of two-day training seminars designed to teach young activists how to campaign effectively against the Second Amendment. Co-Motion events have been held at hundreds of American high schools and colleges.

She formerly served as a staff attorney for the National Prison Project, an ACLU-sponsored initiative that agitates through lawsuits on behalf of convicted felons.

Aron currently writes a blog that is featured on the Huffington Post Internet webzine.
