A Detroit city council member has paid $68 in property taxes this year because city records say her home doesn't exist.
JoAnn Watson's brick Tudor-style home on the city's west side has been occupied since 1926, but city records have classified the parcel as an empty lot for the past decade.
Owners of comparable homes pay $2,000 to $6,500 in property taxes.
Watson told the Detroit Free Press she thought the steep drop in property taxes was a result of tornado damage. She doesn't recall when the tornado struck, however, saying it might have been 1993 or 2002.

let me guess..democrat..my first hint? no mention of party affiliation..had she been a republican it would have been prominently mentioned in the first sentence..
I’m sure her neighbors haven’t minded paying her share. We have to spread the wealth, ya know.
The wind doesn't blow in Detroit, it sucks.
Democrats on taxes- Rules are for THEE not for ME! That is why they are always pushing to raise them. They never really pay them, it is all an illusion. when will folks wake up to this? How many have to be tax cheats to prove it? In this one instance, I wish UBS would release the names of the folks who have accounts that evade taxes. It would be telling for sure!
“She doesn’t recall when the tornado struck, saying
it might have been 1993 or 2002.”
-—this must be the same woman who called 911 because she had a shortage of Chicken McNuggets from McDonald’s.
But seriously folks, this is obviously something they thought no one would notice in Detroit, where it would be a surprise to me ANYONE’S property taxes would be as high
as the cited $6500. They currently can’t GIVE houses away in Detroit, and as everyone knows the city is a mess everywhichway you look.Detroit now, in its own way, is similar to New Orleans post-Katrina. Look at Detroit Real Estate on Google or even Ebay. Unbelievable. One thing it DOESN’T have in common with NOLA is that in NOLA they’ve still got “hopeful” prices attached to even marginal real estate.
Ha! Party affiliation need not be mentioned here...Republicans don’t win elections in Detroit, heck, they don’t even run...
Oh yeah, it was the global warming that caused the tornado that then caused the tax break.
She became a city council member in ‘68. What would her taxes be if she had become a city council member in ‘50?
She’s obviously not related to Sherlock Holme’s Watson, or Watson...form Watson and Crick fame. This Watson is low on watts...a dim bulb...but might be the brightest of the bunch on the Detroit City Council. Scary...and we’re nowhere near Halloween yet.
For those who are not familiar with Detroit and it’s complete corruption, there is no need to look for Party affiliation.
As far as I know, from growing up there, there are NO Republicans anywhere near Detroit politics.
It long ago became a Kleptocracy of the Democrat/Socialists.
And that, my FRiends, is the reason that the hell-hole of Detroit is like that.
Soon to be coming to your town.
Does that mean she hasn't paid her fair share since 1993 or 2002? She has a lot of catching up plus penalties and interest.
Easy to arrange if you have the correct connection, it is Detroit after all, and they have thousands of abandoned homes.
This is really hilarious. I mean it. I laughed when I read it. Corruption is so ingrained in Chicago politics that a statement like that will suffice for Chicago voters. They know it’s pure BS just like I do but the difference is that it’s normal for them. They expect it.
Chicago=Detroit in my post 14. Doesn’t matter though. Same thing.
“Dr. JoAnn Watson is serving her first full term as a Member of the Detroit City Council, where she has sponsored more than 1,000 laws in 5 years, including: a ban on hand-held cell phones while driving, a ban on smoking in public places, and a law demanding that Receiving Hospital & Hutzel Hospital remain open in perpetuity. She is the only woman to serve as the Executive Director of the Detroit NAACP. She was appointed as vice chair of the Detroit Human Rights Commission by Mayor Coleman A. Young and chaired Womens Equality Day Celebrations in the City of Detroit for a decade. Formerly, she was a local and national YWCA executive. Prior to her election, Council Member Watson was Public Policy Liaison for Congressman John Conyers, and was a co-founder of the Coalition for Health Care Equity.”

1000 laws in five years. Real freedom-fighter there.
Disgusting.
Apparently Democrats are all for lower taxes!
Nothing to see, here.
Now I wonder if she will have to pay all of the arrears or lose her house? You know, like the little people.
