Is he a rank-and-file conservative Republican? Obviously not, but he never was, and we knew that going in. What so many fail to realize is the remarkable nature of his being elected at all. Some of us are old enough to remember a time when Republicans were competitive not only in that states gubernatorial races, but for the Senate seats as well. Those included the terms of Tom Kuchel, John Seymour, and Pete Wilson. But todays Republicans seem to think of California and her ginormous chunk of electoral weight as nothing more than a left coast basket of fruits and nuts where no proper GOP member should tread. Might it not be more productive to simply be grateful to have gotten hold of the governors mansion once again?..

T ball politics where there are no winners or losers but we all root for the other side.
I would always chime in and ask if anyone knew where he stood on the issues. Of course, nobody knew then, and nobody knows now.
He already left and voted for the opposition.
We don’t want him, they can have him!
The author of this toilet rag needs to join Colin and join the democratic socialist party lead by the first African Muslim President , Obama.
No, I think then it was more that noone cared because he could "win." Powell's "winnability" was always a selling point more than his ideology.
They say we need RINOs ping!
You forgot the BARF ALERT for the headline. Come on, Jazz Shaw?! You posted this why?
Those who control the Republican Party think much more like Powell than they think like you.
He endorsed and voted for the communist that now occupies the White House. There’s no place in this country for him, let alone the party that should represent the conservative viewpoint.
I would rather have had Powell than Bush.
No he doesn’t. He gave up his place when he voted for the most liberal Democrat in generations. There is one thing of having differing views it is entirely another to betray your country and your party and with the election of Obama that was a betrayal of both.
He wants to be anointed Spokesman Of The GOP, well, that isn't up to us these days. Let him arrange it with the Democrat media - they're the ones doing the anointing. The Republicans didn't throw Powell out of anything, he threw himself out. Who did you vote for, Colin, and why? Yeah, that's what I thought.
Next thing you know, they will say that we should let Democrats lead the Republican Party.
Oh wait, my bad...that’s already the case.
No. Its tough enough trying to persuade people to agree with you without your high profile swells undercutting you every time they open their mouths, and siding with the Democrats on every issue of importance. If they agree with the Democrats on most things, they should just admit it and join the Democrats. We’ll both be happier.
If Powell really considers himself a Republican, he should be able to explain clearly just what it is about us that makes him want to be one of us. I haven’t heard that. I only hear that he wishes we’d shut up.
Restroom monitor.
Didnt we try that with McCain?
I never supported him for President because I had did some research on what he really thought. I did expect better of him. He really stabbed McCain in the back in a way that was more ugly than him simply voting for Obama secretly. The Democrats tried hard to kick Lieberman out of the party and failed even though he voted 90% of the time with them. Some of our Rhinos almost never vote with the Party. They are not really fiscally conservative (they support something called efficient government) and they are not socially conservative so what in the hell are they?
