A Rising Anti-Government Tide

Americans should look carefully at the anti-politician, anti-government mood exhibited in California this week. Just as Proposition 13 and the anti-tax movement of 1978 were the forerunners of the Reagan presidential victory, so the results of Tuesday's vote are a harbinger of things to come.

The repudiation of the California establishment in the series of initiative defeats could hardly have been more decisive. Five taxing and spending measures were rejected by 62.6 to 66.4 percent of the voters. That is a consistent majority of enormous potential. An even larger majority, 73.9 percent, approved the proposition limiting elected officials' salaries when there is a deficit.

This vote is the second great signal that the American people are getting fed up with corrupt politicians, arrogant bureaucrats, greedy interests and incompetent, destructive government.

The elites ridiculed or ignored the first harbinger of rebellion, the recent tea parties. While it will be harder to ignore this massive anti-tax, anti-spending vote, they will attempt to do just that.

My position is that no one should be allowed into this country without permission of the government, and anyone who got in here without permission should be forced out of the country, children included. In what way does this differ from your position?

It is a fact that the American public were conned by the 'rat-infested media into blaming Republicans for the gov shutdown.

The rat infested newsrooms only REPORTED that the ignorant chattering class was "blaming" Republicans for the shutdown. In essence, the scumbags merely "reported" a conclusion that they wanted to see all along. It was nothing less than high-tech push polling by the scumbag Democrat newsrooms, so naturally it didn't take long for outside polls to support the conclusion they wanted. (They have always engaged in this kind of operation for their party, and the practice continues today.)

Gingrich and the cowards didn't have to cave. In fact, I believe that if Gingrich and the Republicans had steeled themselves, continued to forcefully make their case, and even upped the ante a little, they could have ultimately swayed public opinion in their favor.

I honestly fell over backward when I heard the news that the Republicans had folded like a cheap suit. I remember feeling at that time as though the tide was just beginning to turn in our favor. I was head-shakingly disappointed, and I will never let Newt off the hook for that.

As I recall, though, it was Bill Bennett and Jack Kemp and their group who worked hardest to defeat Prop 187. It was their belief that working, taxpaying, traditional Californian families should continue to be forced by big government to flop open their wallets and hand over their money to the illegal alien hordes.

I could never again take either of those two buffoons seriously.

You bet, in addition to Kemp opposing CA Prop 187, he was also a big proponent of affirmative action.

Republicans were given the majority in the house because of Newt’s Contract With America and the reforms he initiated. Then the Clintonistas turned on him and started their campaign of personal destruction and he resigned. The Republicans didn’t run up a big debt, the Democrats did after they got rid of Newt and retook the House.
