Cheney was terrific
American Spectator ^ | May 19, 2009 | Quin Hillyer

In the past I have made quite clear my admiration for former Vice President Dick Cheney. So it will come as no surprise that I think his speech today at the American Enterprise Institute was pitch perfect. But I will say something stronger: I think that if somebody came to the subject fresh, with no preconceived notions, and watched (as so many of us did) President Barack Obama and Cheney back to back today, dueling across town, that open-minded person would believe that Cheney made a far stronger case. And oddly enough, Cheney's very lack of "style points" served only to emphasize rather than detract from the simple, straightforward weight of his message.

The man is THE most qualified to lead this country right now. Actually, he always has been!

Looks like Darth Cheney slammed down the Teleprompter in Chief.

Bush never could articulate why he adopted the policies he did. I'm happy he's letting Cheney do the heavy lifting. The press created a totally false image of the guy. He's scary smart, never rattles and is a deadly debater.

Not sure he’s letting him do the heavy lifting. I think Cheney is doing what he wanted to do throughout the last 8 years but was muzzled by the politically correct President.

We have taken the measure of ZERO, and he comes up short against a real leader.

I bet the Netanyahu meeting went about the same way.

Not "deafening", but correct. President Bush doesn't need to, nor should he, IMHO, enter this debate. Former Presidents should not debate current Presidents (can you hear me Carter???!!)

Cheney is best to lead this national debate . . . in SO many ways ;-)

Good, Bush needs to keep to his ranch and let someone who can speak a complete sentence defend his administration policies

I liked Bush, but I swear in the last year he was POTUS, I thought he had some type of a functioning speech or thought processing problem

The man could hardly complete a coherent sentence.

I think Bush meant well and really thought he could set a higher tone than the crudeness of the Clinton presidency. I suppose he thinks he setting a good example in contrast with the way Carter, Clinton and Obama conduct themselves. But the public doesn't see it that way - he's just made himself a punching bag and left his supporters without a leader who can articulate what we stand for.

Since Obama has proved himself a master at Bush bashing, I would hope that freepers would leave him to it and not join him in it.

I'm not bashing Bush, just making an observation.

Face it, President Bush is a terrible off the cuff public speaker. Did you ever listen to his pressers? In the last year in was in office, they were terrible. Getting lost in mid sentence, mid thought. It occurred to me there might be something wrong with him.

He gave far superior press conferences than Obama did w/o a teleprompter. Granted, that’s not saying much

I bet you’re right. Netanyahu must be puzzled at having to deal with “Amateur Hour In The Oval Office”, aside from Hussein’s betrayal of israel. Hussein can never have the capacity to understand global issues, he’s a small-time small-minded media-made AA style-over-substance politician who was carried by a riptide into waters way over his head.

Bravo Vice-President Cheney. This article is aptly titled. It certainly was a terrific speech.

I agree. If President Bush got into it now, the media would make him the issue and make him look petty (instead of building shrines with no foundation to him, like they do with crazy Carter and the buffoon Clinton).

I will agree with you for his first four years. In his second term he got weak knees and destroyed everything he and the party stood for.

Agreed. Cheney always reminds me of the serious father telling his dopey kid (America) that the world is a dangerous place and you cannot be stupid.

Reminds me of Fred Thompson and Tom McClintock in CA. Fred is good but Cheney is the best.

Anyone see what Lech Walesa said today about the global economic mess. He essetially said it was a hype job to grab power and it was a banking problem. He stood up to the USSR along with Pope John Paul and Lech is a Catholic hero. Meanwhile we are stuck with abortion loving vermin at Notre Dame.
