Government named receiver for BankUnited

The Office of Thrift Supervision on Thursday closed BankUnited of Coral Gables and appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as receiver.

BankUnited was "critically undercapitalized and in an unsafe condition to conduct business," the OTS said in a statement. The bank reported losses of $1.2 billion in 2008.

BankUnited had $8.7 billion in deposits and 85 branches, including 23 in Broward County and 16 in Palm Beach County.

WASHINGTON -- Federal regulators seized the troubled Florida thrift BankUnited FSB on Thursday, a failure the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. estimates will cost its insurance fund $4.9 billion.

I almost put some money there. I'm pretty sure that the last time I was looking for a bank a couple of months ago they had a very high interest rate on bankrate.com. It was high enough that I checked them further and the comments out there scared me away.

I'm glad their rate was high enough to set off my "hint of desparation" warning.

Whenever a CD or money market rate is the highest or dividend or something it is due to higher risk.
