Christopher Kennedy, a son of the late Robert F Kennedy is considering a run for the US Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama, the latest member of his family dynasty to take a stab at politics.
A spokeswoman for the Chicago businessman, Christopher Kennedy, said on Wednesday that Mr Kennedy was "seriously considering" a run but would not say when he would announce his decision.
Mr Kennedy's father was a US senator when he was assassinated while campaigning for the presidency in 1968. He is a nephew of the late President John F Kennedy and current US Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts. His cousin, Caroline Kennedy, earlier this year dropped a bid to be appointed to the New York Senate seat once held by the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.
Mr Obama's former seat is now held by Senator Roland Burris, who was appointed by the ousted former Illinois governor, Rod Blagojevich.
If Mr Kennedy enters the race, he will be part of what is shaping up to be a crowded Democratic primary election for Mr Burris's seat. The state treasurer, Alexi Giannoulias, already is raising money and the Republican, Jan Schakowsky is considering a run, too.
The seat has been in the spotlight since Blagojevich appointed Mr Burris to it after the then-governor's arrest on federal corruption charges. Mr Burris has been under investigation by the US Senate Ethics Committee and the Sangamon County state's attorney for changing his story about the circumstances of his appointment.
He has not said whether he will seek re-election.
At 45, Christopher Kennedy is a prominent member of Chicago's business community. He is president of Merchandise Mart Properties Inc which manages real estate around the country, including Chicago's Merchandise Mart, a sprawling complex at the heart of the

Can’t be any less qualified than, say, Al Franken.
I thought the Senate was the careful, thoughtful, deliberative chamber.
As a nation we have become a caricature. Sad.
He is definitely Robert’s son and a Kennedy. One could easily pick him out in a line-up.
He's a Kennedy - eventually, you'll get to, if he doesn't off himself in some senseless way first.
oh lord
Dear Lord!
The Kennedy epidemic continues to spread, with new cases being reported as far west as Illinois.
yitbos
I hope he’s the nominee. Republican chances of winning will be boosted.
But, but, but...what about Mr. Burris??? How can a rich white guy come in and take away a ‘black’ Senate seat??? Does Kennedy royalty trump racial quotas???
Leave it to a mom to ask the ‘tough’ questions.
Carpetbaggers.. Kennedys and Clintons.
Northeastern liberals have infested almost every state in the union. Yesterday, California voters tried to reject what they sow.
New York didn’t heed the warnings, will you Illinois?
He looks like he could be Nigel Incubator Jones - Upper Class Twit of The Year.
Personally, there are a few more surnames I would add (including Bush)!
We are just a few elections away from selecting all of our "leaders" in "American Idol" fashion! Deliver free beer and snacks to registered homes with the proviso that, if you don't "watch the show" and vote..., the beer and snacks will be added to your IRS tab!
Can we go for any time without this cancer on the body politic infesting the senate in some way.
PLEASE...Your family has done enough to..err..for this country.
Oh God, not another KENNEDY!!! Edward Munch
wow he really looks like his dad a lot. i will say this.. at least he has some experience running a business, and probably has more knowledge of politics than an ordinary joe off the street. it could also be a plus that he does not seem to associate with blago. still, another kennedy, feh.
Please, Illinois voters, spare us this extension of the Kennedy plague. But based upon what Illinois has been sending to the Senate in recent years, I’m not too hopeful.
Not another one! May the curse end!
