California voters kill budget measures
LA Times ^ | May 20, 2009 | Eric Bailey

Reporting from Sacramento -- The "big five" elected leaders -- Schwarzenegger and the legislative chieftains from both houses -- are slated to begin closed-door meetings today upon the governor's return from Washington, where he spent election day after casting a last-minute absentee ballot.

On Thursday a small group of Senate and Assembly members will hold the first of what's expected to be a slew of daily public sessions to wrangle over the details of the budget.

Schwarzenegger has called for cuts that would hit every corner of the state. He announced plans to lay off 5,000 of the state's 235,000 workers and has proposed slashing education by up to $5 billion, selling state properties, borrowing $2 billion from local governments and potentially reducing eligibility for healthcare programs.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa predicted that the city's budget could take a hit -- but he vowed a fight: "I'm going to do everything I can to protect the city coffers."

Worst-case scenarios also call for the release from state prisons of up to 19,000 illegal immigrants, who would face deportation, and the transfer of up to 23,000 other prisoners to county jails.

O.K., who else here does not think that deporting 19,000 criminal illegal aliens is a bad thing?

Just be sure and drop them off at the Mexico/Guatemala border.

This is why it is so important for the socialists to move most taxing and spending to the federal level.

When a state jacks up its taxes, people move to other states. We have seen this happenging in California for the past 20 years. Large percentages of the populations of Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are all refugees from California taxes.

If the federal government jacks up taxes and distributes funds to the states, then taxpayers’ only other option is to leave this country for some other socialist country.

Most of them will just come right back over the border (and then they’ll be free). What we want to happen and what will happen are two seperate things. It’s like liberals wanting to raise taxes on the rich. The effect is never what the policy is designed to address.

Hey Arnold,

How about a 20% cut in welfare payments as well as deporting ALL the illegals you can find?

You could probably even CUT taxes, but that would bring in more revenue.

Among the 19000 illegal aliens are a lot of healthy young men who will promptly hike back across the unprotected border. They need to stay in somebodies prison. How about a new tent prison out in the Mojave Desert. They could staff it with contractors working at lower wages.

What really p*sses me off is the state unions spent millions trying to further rip off the taxpayer but no one said a damn thing about the tens of millions illegals cost this state.

Except Arnold, who called anyone who suggested they were a drain on state coffers, originally enough, a 'racist'.

Let go less than two percent of 235,000 employees?
That’s painful?
Lay off about a third of the worthless govt. wasteful employees. Make them get real jobs and that would be painful.
But good.

Hey, I have a great idea for how to save California - the entire nation should follow the lead of California!

Tax the hell out of everyone and everything, further punish the successful, enhance the material rewards for the worthless, further coddle the criminals, stifle innovation with a growing number of crippling regulations, and mandate more government-funded depravity.

That way, productive Californians who become tired of each dragging behind them ten-plus government dependents on a chain will gain nothing by moving to other states, while the illegals, other third worlders, criminals, the morally disabled, and other parasites will be less likely to concentrate in California. Why should Montana and Wyoming escape their fair share of degenerates victims of the class system?

That is the beauty of destroying every last trace of federalism - the icky "Social Darwinism" which causes differential migration rates (leading to "class segregation") can be put to rest. There must be no easy escape from those machinations which the brightest within the intelligentsia believe will lead us all to utopia. We must have equal suffering across the land! Once we have that, we can finally declare victory in the war on liberty (1913-2009?).

The governor is calling for an increase of $2.3 billion in budget cuts for education on top of $3 billion in cuts that were already planned. He has also called for a $400 million cut in prison costs by shifting inmates to local and federal authorities.

They are facing a 20 BILLION PLUS DEFICIT and they are proposing 5.7 Billion in cuts... Brilliant.

Hey California, You're screwed up, you've been screwed up, for a few decades you got away with it now the piper needs to be paid. You did the same thing NYC did in the 60s, and facing the same issue. Liberal nanny state policies DON'T WORK!

Deport the illegals, stop trying to indoctrinate pre-schoolers into homosexuality, stop pandering to all the nut ball fringe folks and be responsible! California's budget can EASILY be cut by $20 Billion, in fact it could likely be cut by $40 Billion, just means all those stupid laws and programs that should have never been started in the first place will have to end.

Adopting a half time or less state congress should be the first option to cut expenses to include all pay and benefits these greedy b#st#rds have given themselves

You want to be more p*issed off? Take a look at the major contributor to the No on 1D campaign.
None other than the First 5 Association of California.

In other words, taxpayer money that went to First 5 for child care (Prop 10) got rerouted into a political campaign to obstruct raiding the same fund.

Take a look at this gargantuan state agency list and tell me there’s no waste to be cut:

http://www.ca.gov/About/Government/agencyindex.html

It used to be that all the agencies were listed on a single web-page which made it easier to see just how large the state government has become.

What state can possibly do without these?:
* Biodiversity Council
* California Broadband Initiative
* Denti-Cal
* Film Commission
* Museum Resource Center
* Spatial Information Library
* Status of Women, Commission on

And the list goes on. Not only does the state have many agencies which are unnecessary to the governance of the state, there’s no doubt that among the more necessary agencies there is misuse of monies at nearly every level.

These results confirm that by actually passing Prop 1B my county, along with SF and Santa Cruz counties, contain more mush headed, knee jerk crypto marxists than any other county in one of the most liberal states in the union.

Its somehow gratifying - I couldn't bare the thought that there are as many idiots in the rest of the state as I run into here on a daily basis.
