I am afraid we have waited much too long to start putting out the fire. We are so divided against ourselves, (here, Europe, Asia, Africa,) that everyone is a perceived enemy, a potential enemy, or a real enemy and you can't tell which is which anymore.
I know what you mean. There is a side of me misses the days of the Cold War, although even then, the beginnings of today's rots got started, at least you know there was one big, bully USSR that kept us more or less on the same page. It's just an interesting observation, but IMHO, if the USSR was still around during the 1990's or even today, I doubt Obama or even Clinton would have been elected, had there be a Democrat, we might have seen someone like a Sam Nunn.
Those of us who have seen it with clarity are the ones called insane. No one likes having the truth laid out for them in black and white. Their realities clash with truth, therefore, the truth is irrelevant.
I think all we can do now is keep from catching fire ourselves. We will fight and we might die, but I will be nobody's slave.
This is down the road and speculation but if it got to the point where some states breakaway, say the Red ones, we might have to practice triage, parts of the country we know are red and can be trusted, areas in the middle that can be saved with a little effort and those hopeless cases of blue areas where we have to let go and work on much later. We might have to become lean and meaner and take it from there.
BTW, Mesta Machine, I remember they closed up in the 1970's or early 1980's when I was a kid. I live here in Pittsburgh. They were big for a while, I even found an ad in the 1960 Pirate's Program for the World Series of that year.

"This is down the road and speculation but if it got to the point where some states breakaway..." For the first time in my life, this seems possible. I have never, even during the Clinton years, felt this kind of trepidation hanging in the air so thick it is palpable.
Sudden contact from old friends, long scattered, worried and asking about my well-being sends my blood pressure through the roof, and one even asked if I had a way to leave the country if necessary.
I said I could, but wouldn't. If things got that bad, I could never abandon the country, the places, and people I love and allow others to carry the burden. I will do my share and then some.

My Grandfather worked there. When I was a kid, used to go down to the gate near the RR tracks and eat lunch with him out of his lunchbox. Sweet, sweet memories are made of this...
It's Sandcastles now, I think. A waterpark that Kennywood built. I've never been there.
Pittsburgh. I stay as far away from there as I can. I'm countryfied now, hiding out in the woods. But my cousin was just a Pubbie long shot candidate for mayor.
Small world.
