Which is why our founders did not set up a democracy. They set up government of limited powers, to be run by elected representatives of the people and the states. They called it a Republic.
At the end of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Dr. Ben Franklin was asked if we had a Republic, or a monarchy, he said "A Republic...if you can keep it".
Now it's not really known if that exchange actually took place, but if it did, this may be the generation that the "if" gets resolved, in he negative. It can, of course, logically never be finally resolved in the affirmative).
