Sunday's weather was perfect for a picnic and at one gathering people were encouraged to bring more than just hamburgers and hot dogs.

An open carry picnic was held at Marvin Garden's Park in the Town of Onalaska Sunday.

Organizer Hubert Hoffman says the event is in celebration of a recent opinion from the state attorney general that says people who openly carry firearms should not be cited for disorderly conduct.

Hoffman says it has always been legal for people to open carry in Wisconsin and he thinks its a good idea to get people talking about the issue so they realize people who open carry a gun are not a threat.

"Those who choose to open carry a firearm are not a danger to the public. Those who chose to open carry are the general public," says Hoffman.

Hoffman says more than 200 people attended today's event, 99 of them were lawfully carrying a holstered firearm.

The right to bear arms has been quashed in Wisconsin for decades. Now people are celebrating their constitutional rights in spite of the disapproval of Democrats.

Nobody got robbed.

There were no ‘drive-bys’.

I bet there were no protesters anywhere near.

Nope, no protestors and it was front-page news in the La Crosse Trib.

The clerk at the convenience store was wondering why people were buying so many copies of the paper this morning. I picked up two, myself.

We need a lot more of this. Anything that makes the Brady Bunch nervous is a good thing.

FACT: The 2nd Amendment is SELF-incorporated to all government entities at every level. It is MORE ABSOLUTE than the 1st Amendment, or any of the others, because the wording forbids not only CONGRESS, but ANYONE from infringing on it. The 1st says “Congress shall make no law...”. The 2nd say “shall NOT be infringed!” Period! End of debate!

Years ago when I “open carried” holstered sidearms in New Mexico at the local Mall, it felt very uncomfortable.

I had routinely held “legal” concealed carry permits in other states/territories, and at that time, it felt natural to do so.

Experience and hindsight being 20/20, I really think concealed personal weapon carry should always be considered an unquestioned national right of law abiding citizens to bear arms the norm, and that open weapon carry might be considered an action potentially requiring a permit.

My personal choice of self defense weaponry is my own, and unless and/or untill I have used them in an unlawfull, threatening manner against another law abiding citizen, it should not be of any interest to our government, at any level.
