President Barack Obama will issue new vehicle emission standards and pair them with a broader goal of reducing pollution, marking the first time limits on greenhouse gases will be linked to federal standards for cars and trucks.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the administration will raise fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2016, four years earlier than federal law requires.

Officials familiar with the administration's discussions say Obama will unveil the new standards on Tuesday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement had not been made.

California, 13 other states and the District of Columbia have urged the federal government to let them enact more stringent standards than the federal government's requirements. The states' regulations would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent in new cars and trucks by 2016.

Just as our water rights......they belong to the States....not the feds.

You obviously haven’t been keeping up with the push to federalize all waterways in the US.

There’s a technology out there that can bring the F-150 up to that standard. Google Hydraulic Hybrid.

.

I'm sure the Chi-coms will be very happy to saturate the US market with China-built, 3-cylinder Cherys, sold through the new GM.

go and check out the documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car?” In it you will see the seeds of revenge-seeking, white-hot liberal rage against GM for a)fighting California’s attempt to set their own CAFE and mileage standards, and b) withdrawing from the market a prototype electric car that was not ready for prime-time once they won. You can see it in their eyes that they were bound and determied to get even with the “conspirators”.

It probably is window dressing. The CAFE standards levy penalties on the auto companies if their fleet fuel economy exceeds a given benchmark. Are they really going to levy penalties against companies that they effectively control? When they aren’t making any profit at all?

As for 50mpg cars. Sure it can be done. They are close now. You just have to lighten the more fuel efficient models a bit more.

My household already has two cars that get over 35 mpg, and we didn’t need 0’s help. I may just get some leathers and a Harley. I can carry it in the back of my Dodge Cummins when not riding it.

Why stop at 35...Why not 100 MPH? I say the same thing about minimum wage. These folks are just plain crazy.

Yes, I was going to say the same thing but you (napscoordinator) beat me to it. Why stop @ 35mpg. Why not 135mpg? Don't you think that if they auto makers could make a vehicle with 300hp, 0-60 6sec, seat 5 w/comfort, meet safety & code req and get 35mpg they would do it? Think of the money they could make. Obama is doing many stupid things but this might just take the cake. I doubt that Obama could even change a flat tire but he knows the gas mileage that cars should get?

Please go to a site that explains CAFE standards and how they are calculated. This is rudimentary. CAFE stands for Corporate, Average, Fuel, Economy. This means the auto manufactures must meet an AVERAGE of 35mpg on the cars they sell. This is *ucking outrageous. This is one of the dumbest and most arrogant things this clown has done yet.

We're going to see lots of illegal imports coming across the border from Mexico. Complete with fake paperwork. And if Big Brother tries to charge folks for it he's going to find a lot of jury nullification.

Oh here we go again, the technology conspiracist. This is the the same as the political conspiracist. They first appeared when they said there were carburetors that could give you 100mpg. They then said there were tankers off the shore not unloading oil to drive the price up.

These people are ladder day descendants of snake oil salesmen who will sell cures for every ailment, baldness, etc. If only we used some exotic, unproven, dangerous, unscientific, technology we could save the world.

Oh please no more!

Agreed! “Who killed the Electric Car” is a piece of propaganda. It was a terrible piece of garbage that the liberal press loved. Every single point this video makes can be easily rebutted. But this didn't stop this video from becoming a cause celebre for the liberals.

I’ve never heard of ladder day descendants. Are they step stools? However, the technology is real and in current use. As for conspiracies, UPS is one company that’s been seduced. Maybe they’re just stupid.
