The Wright stuff comes to celebrate

The Rev. Amos Brown of the Third Baptist Church in San Francisco celebrates his 33rd year there with a special service at 3 p.m. June 7. The principal speaker is the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, formerly of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, who was Barack Obama's minister before racially charged remarks during the campaign caused the candidate to break with his church.

Brown and Wright attended United Theological Seminary together in Dayton, Ohio, and were both Samuel DeWitt Proctor Fellows, in a program devoted to social justice and a holistic style of leadership and church services.

"I think it's unfortunate what happened to him," said Brown, referring to Obama's break with Wright, "because he was a quintessential scholar and he provided a holistic ministry for thousands. He's written many books; he was named by Ebony magazine as one of the top black preachers in America, and the truth of the matter is that the world wouldn't have heard of Barack Obama if it hadn't been for Wright." Brown said Obama was a young community organizer when he joined Wright's church in Chicago. "It was through the predominantly black church that Barack Obama got his introduction to the South Side of Chicago."

Wright's oratory is "not angry," said Brown. "What he did is nothing but reflect the therapeutic exercise that's been a part of the black church ever since we've been in this country. To vent and share our frustration and have some part in this country where we were treated not even as humans. ... I am honored and pleased that he has accepted my invitation to come and be with me on my 33rd anniversary of this church."

Some Black folks must have a whole different idea of what church is suppose to be about. I thought we were suppose to praise the Lord and ask for forgiveness.

What is a “holistic” style of leadership? Is that the sort of thing practiced at Notre Dame and Georgetown?
