Why would a Christian organization support folks who do not accept Christ?

I must have something terribly wrong in my scriptural understanding. I thought that God was quite displeased when His children made and worshiped the golden calf,I have always equated that golden calf with putting other gods or entities or money or pleasures before Him. Am I wrong?
