Port Officials Use DHS Anti-Terror Cameras to Stop Golf Ball Bombardment
Fox News / AP ^ | May 16, 2009

Posted on 05/17/2009 10:27:44 AM PDT by Stoat

Golf balls are bombarding the Port of Everett and anti-terrorism cameras are being trained on a residential neighborhood to hunt down the source.

Port officials believe someone on Rucker Hill is whacking golf balls down the hill onto port property, endangering dozens of workers and millions of dollars worth of equipment and cargo.

"We're trying to use any means possible to stop it, aside from posting somebody in the field of fire all day and night," said Ed Madura, a port security official.

The port says the flying golf balls constitute a threat to personal safety. Pointing video surveillance cameras toward the likely source is an appropriate use of the equipment, port officials say.

In the eyes of at least one resident in the Rucker Hill neighborhood southwest of downtown, swiveling the cameras from the fence line to the neighborhood is an invasion of privacy.

"Hitting golf balls is a problem, but if they turn their cameras up on the neighborhood and spy on us, that's a bigger problem," said David Mascarenas, a neighborhood watchdog who has for years fought the port to improve the community's access to public land.

(edit)

There have long been tensions between the neighborhood and the port over noise from container ships that are sometimes unloaded in the middle of the night, glare from floodlights and exhaust from idling vessels.

"There's a lot of people out on Rucker Hill that want the longshoremen more or less shut down," Ritchie said.

They live above a major seaport, and they expect peace and quiet? Are these the people that object to military cargoes moving through Everett?

I would imagine so.   This is Western Washington after all, home of The People's Republic of Seattle.

The Navy's presence in Everett has insured that there will always be a sizable population of sane and honorable people there, but there are also a number of brain-dead leftist idiots as well.

Lenin Statue in Fremont (Fremont is one of the numerous hard-Left neighborhoods in far-Left Seattle, about a 45 minute drive south from Everett)

The residents probably do not even realize that the port is likely the reason for their prosperity.

I' m sure that is the case for a great many, and they similarly resent the Navy's strong presence there despite the fact that if it weren't for the Navy, they would have been required to speak German since the 1940's and report their movements to the local Gauleiter.  If that had not been the case, the Navy has still played a critical role in ensuring that all of Everett is not currently toxic from an Islamofascist dirty bomb.  All of this stuff is conveniently forgotten when there's an opportunity to bash Capitalism, the military or America.

Part of going to school is to experiment and have fun.
Sounds like you at least went to a school that tried to have fun.
Life is too serious.

ASOC,
Check out potato launchers on yahoo.
Don’t use google or they try to send you to some damn company that adds with them.
They initially tell you to use hair spray and pvc. then look further and you will be amazed.
Use your imagination.
Have fun.
make sure it is NOT illegal where you use it.

Hell up there I’d bet ya could launch orange ice balls a long way.

Don’t like ‘em pointing cameras at your house? Easy - the judicious use of mirrors in the daytime and floodlights at night renders their cameras useless (at least as far as your property is concerned). Just don’t use a laser pointer...;’}

Ordinarily I couldn't care less if somebody were to photograph the stoat cave, as the most exciting thing that's happened there lately has been a Jambalaya event......

 jambalaya,stoat

but I'd just be really worried that the Port would be unprotected as well as the thought of somebody being paid to monitor the front of my house would not exactly be my idea of an excellent expenditure of limited security resources.

Pointing a laser at a DHS camera would probably bring at least one helo gunship and a sizable SWAT team, and I don't have enough Jambalaya for them all  :-)

Those folks are not noted for having a huge sense of humor, and I haven't heard anything good about prison food or the sort of company that I'd become acquainted with there.  I think that I'll avoid the DHS cameras whenever possible  :-)

Hmmmm. I wonder if there is a / tag for a rhetorical question, however you have both confirmed that of which I was only 99% sure.

Of course the port was there first, and newer additions to the area are complaining about (and now possibly taking chances on injuring workers at) the port facillities.

It would be like moving into Pittsburgh in the '40s and complaining about steel mills.

This whole 'I'm here now and you have to stop whatever it is you were doing that bothers me' syndrome is so common I am surprised it doesn't have a name and listing with other psychological disorders, but unfortunately, catering to the whiners has become a full-time business.

They might as well move to North Dakota and gripe about winter (NOT a suggestion, believe me!).

The same tactic is often used when the lawyers can get traction to advance every Leftist agenda item out there, and the Muslims have nearly conquered Europe with it.

I don’t think Tiger Woods is willing to part with his yacht for as long as it would take to go from Florida to the Pacific NW and back.

More damage has been done to personal freedom in this country by using the "war on terror" excuse than I care to think about.

This a case of flying golf balls.

I quit flying when we put a bunch of union thug government employees to checking shoes, toothpaste and bras at airports.

Don't even think about making me give up my golf clubs.

Port is now perhaps more vulnerable to criminal and perhaps terrorist infiltration and actions.

The DHS would directly be at fault if this port was attacked, not the media nor the residents of the area. I hate the media but honestly, this is a case of government idiocy.

DHS cammera's are supposed to be used for anti-terrorism missions. THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE USED TO HUNT GOLF BALLS.
