With a reach across the political divide for Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman as ambassador to China, President Barack Obama may have sidelined for now a potentially formidable Republican moderate and possible White House challenger in 2012. ... Huntsman, 49, is fluent in Mandarin Chinese from his days as a Mormon missionary in Taiwan. He previously served as U.S. ambassador to Singapore and as a deputy U.S. trade ambassador.
...As ambassador, Huntsman could play a critical role in getting China to sign onto a new international agreement to curb the emissions blamed for global warming. The Obama administration has said it is willing to enter into a treaty, but that participation by China the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases could influence the success of any global pact and whether U.S. lawmakers will ratify the agreement.
As governor, he signed an initiative establishing a regional effort to reduce global warming. In a 2006 speech at Shanghai Normal University, Huntsman spoke of the need for China and the U.S. to collaborate on environmental issues.
Before becoming governor in 2005, Huntsman made millions as chairman and chief executive of his family business, Huntsman Corp., a global chemical manufacturer with more than 12,000 employees worldwide. Revenues last year exceeded $10 billion.
...Jeff Bader, Obama's senior adviser on Asia, knew Huntsman from when they both worked in the U.S. Trade Representative's office, and he contacted Huntsman about a month ago to discuss becoming ambassador to China, according to the White House.
Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, followed up two weeks ago. Obama made an offer on May 5, and Huntsman accepted. The two then met last Saturday in the Oval Office when Huntsman was in town for the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.

New, insider story which explains the “why” at the bottom of the page.
It’s cap and trade again. Rahm’s/Obama’s game.
Also, the guy’s corporation has tons of offices, maybe factories, in China. No reporter thought this worthy of mention?
Another mormon RINO. What a surprise!
China will NEVER agree to Cap and Trade! China uses THREE times the energy per unit of GDP than the U.S.
This sounds like a fool's errand and the Huntsman family didn't get rich by being fools. It appears Oba Mao is using Huntsman's appointment as a figleaf of bipartisanship and Huntsman is using the appointment to promote their business interests in China.
I never thought I would say that China was less of an enemy to this nation than the POTUS, but it is entirely possible that they could provide a much needed check of Oba Mao's plans to bankrupt this nation since China is one of our larger creditors.
Of course not. They are exempted under Kyoto and making a mint on phoney carbon credits sold to Europeans, little doubt with kick backs to European collabos and certainly Goldman Sachs is involved.
But in the US, critics, even some liberals who have opened their eyes, have a powerful, irrefutable and easily understandable argument against it—China is exempted as Kyoto stands today. Cap and trade won’t work to reduce global emissions, and works as a subsidy to Chinese industry, not only as a tax on Americans.
Obama and the carbon lobbies tried to brush that off with the “we’ll lead by example, China will follow” ridiculousness. That said, Team Bush used that same reasoning too when not enforcing fair trade with China.
However, it didn’t catch on, apparently. They have a hope they can “change” China, which isn’t surprising, given their stupidity.
Oh please, please, please, get him out of Utah! And I hope he takes Bennett and Hatch with him!
ANYONE that would take a position in the Obama Administration is automatically DQed from Repubican POTUS 2012 RATMOD (Right At The Moment of Decision)!
Smart move by O. Neutralizes a potential opponent even if he is a RINO.
I can save everyone alot of time and effort. It ain't gonna happen. The Chinese are not into handcuffing themselves for phony, baloney, fake, science that empowers yuppies.
>formidable Republican moderate ,
would sarah palin ever get the word “formidable” attached to her name?
for example, sarah palin formidable republican conservative.
not in todays’ media.

It’s like a class reunion.
They may sign it. And they will certainly ignore it.
