The University of Notre Dame seeks to be a preeminent research university with a distinctive Catholic character... The above words were taken from the website of Notre Dame, specifically, the Provost's home page.
I guess now we know just how "distinctive" that Catholic character is.
You know, I always thought those stories about the supposed "agreement" between Adolf Hitler and Pope Pius XII were disgusting slander of the worst kind, a blood libel for the ages.
Now, I'm really not so sure.

Please read this recent article:
Vatican planned to move to Portugal if Nazis captured wartime Pope
The wartime Papacy has nothing to do with current Notre Dame.

I beg to disagree.
- The blood libel against Pius XII has long been laid to rest, as Israeli historians (e.g. Pinchas Lepide) have uncovered the extensive (and successful) efforts made by Pius XII to utilize Catholic networks to save literally hundreds of thousands of Jews. Pretty good overview here.
- There's no evidence at all that the present Holy Father is sleeping through the Obama threat, let alone collaborating. The head of the Apostolic Signatura, roughly analogous to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Abp. Raymond Burke, has made it perfectly clear that the Vatican considers Obama a menace to the Gospel of Life (covered here),and the Vatican State Dept has reportedly blocked the nomination of 2 or 3 different proposed U.S. Ambassadors to the Vatican because the Obama Administration insultingly proposed the names of "Catholic" pro-abort stooges (Caroline Kennedy and Doug Kmiec were the names I'd heard mentioned.).
And the ball is still in play.
I, personally, find thing looking hopeful than they have in my whole lifetime. More dangerous; but more out in the open, and therefore more hopeful.
