Why are Republicans offering a carbon tax?
Hot Air ^ | May 14, 2009 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 05/14/2009 2:53:01 PM PDT by Bratch

Conservatives have warned of the disastrous economic effects of Barack Obama’s proposed cap-and-trade system and the massive burdens it will impose on American families. Republicans have derided it as a tax, and a particularly regressive one, that will force working-class earners to choose between heat, lighting, and food. In response, House conservatives have proposed … a carbon tax?

Tax-&-Spend, Tax-&-Spend, Tax-&-Spend

I think it's about time we start fleecing some of these jerks in all levels of government. Apparently, they think the Tea Party's weren't aimed at them.

The FACT is, global warming is a algorean wetdream fantasy. And anyone calling themselves a conservative better get that through their thick skull ASAP

Agreed. I don't think anyone is disputing that. I don't know what Jeff Flake is doing supporting global warming in any way -- but he's not the only Republican. McCain is on board; Giuliani; Huckabee; Romney; Schwarzenegger; Crist; Palin. All of them!

My post was primarily referring to the headline, of why one might choose a tax over the cap-and-trade scam. Indeed, IF global warming was a real threat and IF we really believed that it could be stopped through human action, then levying a tax to accomplish that is a far more direct method of funding such an investment than would be cap-and-trade.

I would bet that most haven't researched all the gory details of what comes along with a cap-and-trade program. (I was a masochist and actually read the McCain/Lieberman bills they introduced). I am encouraged that so many at least recognize it as BAD -- a tax, of a different variety. But, as marron pointed out, it C&T is also a vehicle for white collar crime. It's also a system that allows the government to choose which businesses will be winners and losers. It also creates a huge bureaucracy to monitor, control not only greenhouse gases but to set up an SEC-like entity to oversee carbon trading. I could go on...

When Schwarzenegger first shoved cap-and-trade onto California, he was quoted over and over in the MSM calling it a "market based solution." Capping greenhouse gases is NOT market based. Setting up a market to trade hot-air has some market qualities, but it is a dishonest scam to enrich some strategically positioned entities that have spent the last decade getting ready to pounce.

Everyone needs to fight the AlGorean fantasy -- whether taxes or cap-and-trade. I am still hopeful it can be killed.

I am not so hopeful. Seems more and more republicans are falling for this fraudulence, just as the hard science is shattering the algorian theories to pieces. It will take a real Reaganesque leader to drive a stake through its heart. Alternately, it will take a rebellion of the people. Either way is fine with me.

Cap and Trade is a Wall Street wet dream, and is SURE to be a scandal bigger than Bernie Maddoff could ever pull off! How do you “title” the underlying assets in any “green credit”?? The same trees will be used time and time again, for supposedly different “credits”! Also, what if the “green” activity goes broke, burns down, etc? Who will track that? It is a huge scam!

Bump!

See my post above. I see you are one of the masochists (like me) that actually has dug into some of the gory details, LOL.

Yep. Like I said, Cap-and-Trade “allows the government to choose which businesses will be winners and losers.”

Looks like the recent EPA decision (holding a gun to automakers heads) has made them complicit in the scam so they can be one of the “winners.”

What a sick way to run a government.

Well, a year or two ago, some freepers thought global warming legislation was “no big deal” or “not an important issue.” Granted, they were usually in mode of defend-at-all-costs for their favored candidate. But still — I see the tide turning a bit. Hopefully, as more people figure out what this means, we’ll see a tsunami of opposition. At which point, the political whores will scramble to correct their position.

Of course, that would put a dent in the plans of the world government guys... I wonder what method they have in their back pocket if this one fails. It’s about time for global cooling again, isn’t it? LOL

Ethanol is STUPID!

WELL, at least, if you make Methanol from FOOD, Ethanol is STUPID!

If we made ethanol from sugar, it would make a bit more sense, in that it would be much easier and more efficient to produce.

If we made ethanol from grass or some NON FOOD product, it would make mores sense.

Using food is expensive.

Using food is inflationary.

Ethanol fuels have very low energy, very low power production, compared to gasoline.

Ethanol does virtually NOTHING for legitimate “environmental” concerns.

Ethanol also does very little to reduce carbon dioxide, but that is not at all a goal any of us should care about.

Ethanol is a scam, a waste of tax payer dollars, and a politically driven issue with no common sense behind it.

“Liz Cheney and Sarah Palin...the Dynamic Duo...that would be a laugh riot watching the Dems tie themselves into knots dealing with those two...they would be out manned...”

I did not think of that one but it has serious implications the Rats would be having strokes over them and good payback for the misery the Communists have brought on us!

Yes, many still don’t understand what the global warming industry is all about. I hope you are correct. But the RINO wing of the GOP seems determined to assert itself. Case in point, the NRSC and most senators individually jumping in to support Chalie F’n Crist in an open primary.

They were salivating at the re-election prospects for Sphincter as well.
