SHANGHAI General Motors Corp. plans to begin exports of vehicles made in China to the United States within two years, ramping up sales to more than 50,000 by 2014, reports said Wednesday.
A spokeswoman for GM in China did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reports, which were said to be based on a company recovery plan given to U.S. lawmakers.
GM intends to sell 17,335 made-in-China passenger cars in the U.S. market by 2011, the Shanghai Securities News and other reports said. By 2014 exports would triple to more than 51,000, it said.
The main focus would be on exporting small cars similar to the Chevrolet Spark, the reports said.
If true, GM could end up becoming the first automaker to begin exporting to the U.S. from China: previously announced plans by Chinese manufacturers to crack the U.S. market have so far fizzled.

I’m never buying another GM product.
I'd be surprised if they had 20 warheads pointed at the US.
probably several thousand per car, besides it beats the heck out of losing several thousand per car which is what is happening now.
The pontiac torrent and chevy equinox have had chinese engines in them for the last 3 years. The engine design is GM, but it is made in china.
This makes perfect sense to me. Where else would Obama Motors make their cars...a communist ran auto company making cars in Communist China.
And how much of GM do the Unions own??? Hmmm, wonder how it feels to own a company that hires foreign labor to replace you? It is all very confusing.
But, but, we sell our debt to China. They send us manufactured goods and we send them dollar deposits in banks and they use those dollars to buy T-Bills and other financial assets
It’ll be a cold day in HE!! before I buy a car made in China.
Everything I’ve ever bought Chinese made has been inferior at best, usually junk.
If Chinese planes, tanks, missiles, ships are made with the same quality as the junk sold to us, we have nothing to worry about from their military.
Unfreakin believable.
“In 1989, 31-year-old Leslie Ann Pluhar, driving a 1987 Yugo over the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan, was blown over the bridge’s 36-inch railing by a 50 mph gust of wind.”
A friend of mine was part of the recovery team for Leslie.
The team had an unofficial motto after the incident.
“Yugo over, we go under”
That's just it Vinnie, I wished it were so.
Unfortunately the Chinese are anything but stupid.
Naturally they'll get the good stuff while we --continue to-- get junk.
Can't be too much longer and they'll be making our planes, tanks, missiles and ships anyway.
And here we thought it couldn't get any worse with Clintigula's slimy deal with Bernie Schwartz & Loral.
~sigh~
The people, dead and alive.
They do love their Democrats.
obozo & michelle tell us to go for the union jobs like electritians & nurses. Yep, we’ll be getting $70,000/yr. Don’t worry, be stupid.
electricians - ooops
What a sad day this is, for all.
And, invariably, it breaks after the first use!
So, likely, GM would import vehicles similar to the SATURN, small fuel efficient vehicles where cost to the consumer is the primary goal and will be used to get from point A to point B. SATURN never turned a profit anyway, so GM is giving up on making small fuel efficient vehicles in America.
That’s the point: if the engine design is GM, then even if it is made in China it will be made to GM’s specifications or lose their contract. In contrast, a Chinese-designed engine built to Chinese specs for a regular (not luxury)vehicle...no thank you very much. And how about some Chinese drywall for your house?
Unfortunately, most people will just as they buy cars from Germany, Japan, and Korea right now.
