One in five students dropped out of a California high school last year - about the same as the year before, state Superintendent Jack O'Connell announced Tuesday. The graduation rate also held at about 68 percent.
The news that little had changed - despite O'Connell's calls for improvement and years of pointing to the moral imperative of helping failing students - prompted a round of criticism among advocates and critics of public education and from at least one candidate for the top school job.
"We don't need another report to tell us that we are failing miserably to educate the future citizens of California," said state Sen. Gloria Romero, D-East Los Angeles, who is running for state superintendent next year.

Blacks? Mexicans?
The Brady family would be so proud.
Is this the thread where someone post a picture of Sean Penn from Fast Times at Ridgemont High?
Any effort to improve public schools should be directed at helping solely those students who are actually interested in learning. If people want to choose to drop out, that’s their problem. Unless those people can be made to want to learn, no amount of improvement to the schools will help them.
No, Japanese Americans and Jewish kids.
It’s all whitey’s fault. We need more busing. Yeah that’s it more busing.
BS - its 80% and of the 20% left, 80% cannot read their diploma.
California - highest paid teachers in the nation.
Mostly ignorant impoverished people of all races. The most common denominator is being raised by a single mother.
Illegals? or Citizens?
Jack O’Connell is a career liberal and teacher’s union hack politician who needs to be fired. From state assemblyman to state senator, to state controller to state superintendent. No small wonder this state is in such a mess.
California, just collect all of the titles of the school properties, open up a REIT, do an IPO and privatize the whole thing. Take the money and pay down your debt, and never get in the education business again.
The Brady family would be so proud.

As in “The Brady Bunch”?
Let’s hope zero fasttrax his new freebie ‘pell grant’ college education program with auto issuing of ‘5th grade graduates’ GED’s. Too many of the Pell Grants are a total waste of taxpayer money since far too many who take advantage of them are just not college material. I like to refer to one of my Pell granters who on the first screen of her final presentation, typed ‘Dubble click’.
Yes. When that show came out it drove my Mother nuts. Acting like every family has a maid and bullshit problems solved by superior parents in 30 minutes. She had 7 of us and did everything (almost). (Her #1 peeve was God not mentioned at all in that series.)
How can that be? The diploma is in Spanish.
There should be such a thing as a junior high school diploma, certifying by the end of 8th grade that (for example) the student can read and write (in English) and do arithmetic (including fractions and decimals). I think a lot of employers do not expect more than that when hiring, probably less. Some kids who do not get a high school diploma (which for California requires an exit exam where algebra is tested) would at least get this. Students would not be allowed to proceed to an academic high school without passing the junior high exam.
Let’s be realistic. Lots of people are not that smart, and it appears that this fraction is higher in certain groups. Stop pretending everyone can get a real high school education, much less attend college. That would be unrealistic even if America were 100% white or Asian, and it is even more absurd with the current demographic mix.
How many kids at Berkeley or UCLA have two parent households?
