The latest matchup: Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele vs. Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and a likely frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
Steele cast doubt on Romney's conservative credentials Friday and said the Republican base rejected Romney because "it had issues with Mormonism" and was unsure of Romney's commitment to opposing to abortion rights.
Romney's camp took issue with the suggestions that the most reliable Republican voters are intolerant and fired back Tuesday, with spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom saying, "Sometimes when you shoot from the hip, you miss the target."
Sen. John McCain, Romney's former rival for the presidential nomination, also stepped in to do damage control.
"I think the fact that Mitt Romney succeeded as much as he did and remains an important and central figure in our Republican Party -- and I wouldn't be surprised to see him run again -- is a testimony, I think, to the inclusiveness of the Republican Party," said McCain, R-Arizona.

Romney to McCain: "I can't believe they actually think the R stands for Republican!"

We have a bunch of corporatist statists (all of whom supported the TARP) feuding over meaningless rhetoric intended to fool the sheeple.

If ROmney is looking to McNutjob for support, I might reconsider supporting a Romeney run.
McCain is TAINTED meat. Any Republican should distance themselves from him and any Bushes out there.

the Republican base rejected Romney because "it had issues with Mormonism" It is about his policies, not his religion.
And Time-Lies-CNN never mentions that Harry Reid is a MORMON.

McCain puts the knife into Romney with his comment,
"and I wouldn't be surprised to see him run again -- is a testimony, I think, to the inclusiveness of the Republican Party," said McCain, R-Arizona."The implication is that Romney is not reprsentative of the majority of the party.

Given the current state of our economy (sky-high unemployment, record deficits, unchecked spending), it’s painfully obvious to everybody but the most bigoted Mormon-haters, that Romney would have been the best man for the job right now.
I contributed money to, campaigned, and cast my vote for Romney in 2008...and will do so in 2012.

Funny how republicans have to move to the center but the dems never go to far left. Also why are they still quoting Colin Foul he’s a democrat.

What about the hatred of Team Romney for America, the GOP, and Gov. Palin?
"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"
"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"
"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"
"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"
"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"
Novak: "Fred Thompson drop-out rumors traced to Romney campaign"
Said Novak: "The rumors were traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign,
trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson."
"Despite outspending his rivals by huge margins throughout the primaries,
(Mitt Romney, Carpetbagger UT,CA,MA,NH,Mexico) lost Iowa, South Carolina, Florida and California.
The only primaries he won were in Michigan, where Dad was governor; LDS states;
and a few states on Super Tuesday in which his California-obsessed rivals
couldn't spare the cash to advertise.
Only John Connolly in 1968 had a worse cash-to-delegates ratio.
And John McCain rightly did not like Romney's tactics during the primaries.
(W)hen (Romney's early leads) started slipping away, he resorted to unfair,
distorted, scorched-earth negative ads, betting that his opponents couldn't
afford to spend enough for the truth to catch up to his charges."

I don’t believe McCain is defending Romney with that statement. It is a nuanced way of slaming him.

Not to be left out, former Arkansas governor and likely 2012 contender Mike Huckabee blasted the group's planned listening tour, writing in a column for Fox News that it was "hard to keep from laughing out loud." Huckabee called it sad that Jeb Bush thinks the party needs to move past Reagan and equally upsetting that "it doesn't plan to listen much to the Republicans who became Republicans because they believe in the sanctity of life, traditional marriage and express support for the Second Amendment." OK! I'm getting a little senile in my old age. Someone remind me why I didn't like Mike Huckabee in the primaries.
