The story I heard was that folks like Ike and Patton wanted the M-1 to shoot a 6.5 or 6.2 but MacArthur (in a famous first use of the phrase "politically correct") overruled them stating the gummint had way too much 30-06 in warehouses to develop a rifle that didn't shoot it.

If true, MacArthur was the smarter man.

We won that war through superior logistics and the application of firepower.

The cartridge was unimportant, as long as we had MILLIONS of rounds of it.
