BOSTON The head of the Republican Party said Tuesday he regrets the public interpretation of comments in which he said the GOP voted against Mitt Romney last year in part because he was a Mormon. "Chairman Steele regrets the way his comments have been interpreted," Republican National Committee spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said in a statement.
"Chairman Steele believes Mitt Romney is a respected and influential voice in the Republican Party and looks to his leadership and ideas to help move our party and our nation in the right direction."
Gitcho is a former Romney campaign staffer.
A Romney aide did little to veil his displeasure with Steele.

the media misintepret and blames steele for it?
Steele reminds me more of Colin Powell by the day.
Who knows what Mike believes?
Maybe all these guys should concentrate on talking about democrats (and there sure as heck is enough to talk about) and stop giving into the goading by the MSM to destroy each other.
Steele, so much potential, so few results.
As long as it remains Rinos having a cat fight let it continue.
They gonna have to get Huck onboard, I don’t know. ;-)
I can't argue with any of that.
Exactly. Jeez, I want to like the guy, but he is a gun grabber and a woose as well as divisive to the party.
Our so called “leaders” are a walking cluster-fu*k..complete with clown shoes and a little squeaker bicycle horn...unbelievable..Can ANYONE stop being a damn child for five minutes and see that our country is being absolutely destroyed. I mean I’d hate to make any of these wealthy comfortable politicians uncomfortable...but Good Lord,Rome is burning and these clowns are only re-stringing the fiddler’s other bows...
I didnt like Mitt because he is a career aristocrat closet liberal politician. (And he looks like a Ken doll)
I could give a hoot about his faith.
Peter principle in progress. Great Lt. Governor not so much above that.

I am beginning to wonder. Did Michael Steele vote for Obama?
oops sorry for the double post..but hey, the point needed to be emphasized haha
Heyup.
I think Steele covered most of the valid criticisms about Mit.
Some people didn’t like his Mormonism. Some didn’t like his liberal flip-flopping (including me).
He’s not a career aristocrat pol. Yes, his dad was Governor of Michigan, what, 30 years ago? Didn’t help him much in Mass, and it definitely didn’t help him last year.
The best thing he had going FOR him is he has more business experience than ALL the other presidential candidates—from BOTH parties—put together. Apparently that wasn’t enough to get people compfortable with his compulsive desire to be all things to all people, on every side of the issue.
Well said FRiend. Where are our leaders?
He just wasnt the guy for the job.
And all Mikes party self searching isnt helping.
We need a leader. some one who defends the constitution without worrying about mussing up the hair of the PC group du jour.
Sarah was all that, and the liberal media destroyed her.
I can argue with that.
The “base” in New Hampshire was Democrats that voted McCain. Not Conservatives.
I am a conservative, and I do believe Mitt is also.
