SHERMAN, TX -- The U.S. Army Sergeant charged with five counts of murder in Monday's shooting at a Baghdad military counseling clinic has ties to Texoma. Sgt. John M. Russell, 44, is from Sherman, Texas, as are his parents and one of his three sisters. Sgt. Russell also has a sister in Denison and a sister in Colbert, Oklahoma.
The Army lists Russell's address on Edwards Road in southeast Sherman near Luella. His unit is the 54th Engineering Batallion out of Bamberg, Germany.
Maj. Gen. David Perkins told reporters Tuesday that Russell has been charged with five counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault in the fatal shooting at a military counseling clinic in Baghdad. Russell was taken into custody following the Monday shooting at Camp Liberty that killed five soldiers. Perkins said the dead included two doctors - one from the Navy and the other from the Army. The other three dead were enlisted personnel.
According to sources Russell had his weapon taken away from him last week by the Army. An investigation is underway as to how Russell reacquired a weapon.
First News is conducting a one-on-one interview with Sgt. Russell's father from his home in Sherman. We'll have that interview in its entirety posted on KXII.com as soon as the video arrives.
Looks like it's a bit more complex and sad than on first sight.
Without knowing much about the shooter, I can say that having lived in the Lake Texoma area in the past, there are some mighty good people from there, and this fellow seems to have been one. Of course, something happened, but, he was no jihadist.
Sad. We were just in Sherman for a baseball tourney. Nice folks there.
Prayers for his family as well.... this is going to be a very rough time for them.
I don’t get why they call out the names of the cities where his sisters live.
What a tragedy from start to finish. Pray for the dead soldier’s families and for the Russell family as well.
With all of the negative comments the father is stating about military officers I wonder if he was ever in the military himself. He is very paranoid about not being told the whole truth about the incident.
He also states that he hopes that Obama will look into it. What they hey?????????
Thanks. Seems a lot of bad news lately for a small town, though.
This Winter: Nutcase who killed wife and two children, cutting out their hearts, blinded by gouging out then eating remaining eyeball.
Last Summer: Bus crashes killing 17 Vietnamese Catholics on way to retreat.
Few years ago: Polish truck driver dozed off, crossing freeway median killing ten in fiery crash.
Good news: We voted McCain over Obama 2:1.
Sounds as if it might get ugly. Prayers.
But he's a hardly objective person, and the information that came from his son could very well be wrong.
And sadly, we seem to be in a world where some folks trust Obama to help them. The only way Obama will look into this is if it makes the military look bad.
I hate our media. This man is obviously grief stricken and should be talking to the media. When oh when are more people going to learn to tell these folks to take a long walk on a short pier when they shove a mic at them.
First time I saw this was like 3 minutes ago.
He killed 5 of his fellow soldiers but not himself? Somebody explain to their families that they weren't killed by Jihadist but a fellow soldier.
