TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian homeland immediately after he arrived in Israel Monday, a stance that could put him at odds with his hosts on a trip aimed at easing strains between the Vatican and Jews.
The pope also took on the delicate issue of the Holocaust, pledging to "honor the memory" of the 6 million Jewish victims of the Nazi genocide at the start of his five-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories.
Benedict urged Israelis and Palestinians to "explore every possible avenue" to resolve their differences in remarks at the airport after he landed.

Might as well just cave in all the way and sell Israel down the river.
Seig Heil!
This pope is no JPII?
Why would he have to apologize? how can he be wrong when he is the Holy See?
I’ve assumed this pope to be a Christian man. Surely he did not call for the Covenant land to be divided? Jordan was to be “Palestine” originally.

It’s called Syria and Egypt ,,, push them out... cut off their water.
How many people actually think that creating a Palestinian homeland would appease them and end tensions... might work for for a week or so, then they’ll find another reason to lob rockets in Israel.
Exactly! The only Palestinian State acceptable to the PLO is the entire state of Israel. But why should we be so surprised about this pope? Controversy follows him like a bad penny probably ever since he raised his hand to the Furher at Nazi Youth meetings; he has called the Roman Catholic community "the only true Christian Church" he continues the line about "birth control being un-Godly" and he wants to take the church backwards in liturgy to the Latin Mass--I suppose to further separate from the rest of Christianity.
Give ‘em the Vatican.
LLS
Yet another post-Vatican II pope who keeps his mouth shut on matters important to Catholic and Christian salavation, but not on matters that are none of the business of the Roman Catholic Church!
So disgusting....
Hey I'm all for a Pallie homeland too - how about in Madagascar?

I believe Israel has stated they would favor a separate state though, if and only, they were guaranteed it would be free of violence and terrorism against Israel; if their founding documents were to promote Israel's right to exist. And there is no chance of that ever happening.
They SHOULD have a homeland....EVERYONE should have a Homeland.....it SHOULD be a piece of JORDAN!
Oh PLEASE! The Pope is right....he has no intention of sugesting that Israel or Jerusalem should be divided.
I think everybody should calm down. The facts on the ground are that the majority of Israelis reconciled with idea of a future Palestinian state. Road Map was approved by Knesset. But the devil is in the details. The current government said already that it holds itself obligated to follow on what previous government and Knesset signed. But! It insists on Palestinians completing their part of the bargain: stop the violence and advocacy of violence, disarm terrorists, etc, etc. When and if the Palestinians actually do that, then why not? But no state until then.
Its hard to find a more sensible position.
Of course, IF Pope said that he wants Palestinian state tomorrow regardless of anything else (did he say that?) then I strongly disagree.
In 1921 all of Israel and Jordan was to be Israel's land. Brother Benedict has just told YHvH Benedict is now working for the Evil One. Amen ! brother.
shalom b'SHEM Yah'shua HaMashiach
Jordan was created to provide "Land for Peace".
that YHvH's Word is wrong.
Yup, the only real issues are timing and sovereignty, a concept introduced by GWB. Worth noting that Knesset approved the Road Map with reservations that, like Oslo, requires compliance for progress to take place, and that the state be demilitarized. Other than what he said, I don't know what people expected the Pope to say.
