Roman Catholics’ War Over Abortion (NYT Barf Alert!)
New York Times ^ | 5/9/09 | Peter Steinfels

Posted on 05/10/2009 11:54:25 AM PDT by wagglebee

Discord is nothing new for Roman Catholicism. But the controversy surrounding the appearance of President Obama at the University of Notre Dame’s commencement on May 17 suggests that run-of-the mill discord among American Catholics is escalating into something closer to civil war.

Just watch that airplane circling over the famous Golden Dome of Notre Dame’s Main Building and the spire of the university’s Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The plane pulls a banner with a picture of an aborted fetus.

The group flying the banner is unhappy not just with the university but also, according to a spokesman quoted in The South Bend Tribune, with “the pro-life community at Notre Dame.”

“If they were doing a good job of reaching the campus,” he said, “it’s unlikely Obama would have been invited.”

Now listen to Bishop Robert W. Finn, bishop of the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese in Missouri. “We are at war!” he told an anti-abortion convention on April 18. “We are engaged in a constant warfare with Satan.”

Although this war must never involve violence, he said, and Christians must love the human enemies who come under Satan’s power, “even without their fully realizing it,” he went on to say that the most dangerous enemies were not those openly attacking the church but “more subtle enemies.” These included Catholics who “attack the most fundamental tenets of the church’s teachings.”

In the next breath, he condemned Notre Dame for inviting Mr. Obama to give the commencement address and receive an honorary degree. Bishop Finn did not spell out whether the invitation was the work of Satan.

Thanks! Considering that they have been sneering at us for over fifty years it is good to see them circling the drain!

They are free to leave and have continue their social networks and sing Kumbaya elsewhere.

The frustration of Catholic leaders with Catholic politicians who made little or no effort to reconcile their support of abortion rights with church teaching on the morality of abortion goes back decades.

You've seen those signs carried by frustrated picketers over the years: "Ted Kennedy: PUT MORE EFFORT into reconciling your support of abortion rights with Catholic teaching on the morality of abortion."

Note how the politicians support "abortion rights," while the Church has a teaching on "the morality of abortion." (CODE WORD ALERT: "morality," for liberals, is self-evidently private, except sometimes, when it is self-evidently public, e.g., war, "torture," a tax cut, a spending cut, etc.) In other words, the failure of understanding is all on the part of Church "leaders," who fail to grasp the blindingly obvious truth that the Church's teaching that abortion is "immoral" has nothing whatsoever to do with "abortion rights."

So: all you pro-abortion Catholics, get in there and put more effort into explaining to the bishops once again that they need to just shut up about abortion.

Wait a minute. The “pro-life community” needs to “reach” the campus of Notre Dame. Specifically, the PRESIDENT of Notre Dame?

The President of Notre Dame is a goddam CATHOLIC PRIEST!

Why should “the pro-life community” NEED to “reach” him in order to prevent an invitation to the most pro-abortion President in history.
