Cheney picks Limbaugh's version of the GOP
The Hill ^ | 05/10/09 11:16 AM [ET] | Michael O'Brien

f forced to pick, former Vice President Dick Cheney said he'd side with conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh over his administration's former Secretary of State, Colin Powell.

"If I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd choose Rush Limbaugh," Cheney said when asked about whose vision of the GOP he'd side with. "My impression was that Colin was no longer a Republican."

Cheney spoke on one of the more dogged issues facing the GOP during an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday, encouraging Republicans' outreach efforts while maintaining that the party needs to be true to its roots.

"I don't think the Republican Party ought to move far to the left," Cheney said. "The suggestion our Democratic friends always make is, 'Well, if you Republicans were just more like Democrats, you'd win elections.' Well, I don't buy that."

Cheney also asserted the Bush administration's policies on enhanced interrogation and domestic surveillance saved as many as hundreds of thousands of lives.

Cheney said he has absolutely no regrets over the policies put in place during the Bush administration, which have spurred a fierce debate since President Obama ordered the reversal of several policies and the release of memos detailing the use of those policies.

"I'm absolutely convinced we saved thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of lives," Cheney said during his "Face the Nation" appearance. "If you'd look at it from the perspective of a senior government official ... this was exactly what was needed to do."

Cheney reiterated his assertion that the Obama administration has made the U.S. less safe by reversing Bush-era policies, and called again for the release of intelligence reports during his time in office which, Cheney claimed, would vindicate his administration's work.

"Release the memos, and we can look and see for yourselves what was produced," Cheney told CBS. "If we're going to have this debate, it ought to be a complete debate."

The former vice president said that he put in a formal request for the declassification of key memos six weeks ago, but has not yet heard anything back from the Obama administration or the national archives since then.

Cheney asserted the memos "overwhelmingly" demonstrate the effectiveness of waterboarding and other "enhanced interrogation" tactics. Critics have alleged that those tactics amount to torture.

The interview was Cheney's latest in a renewed round of publicity, during which he has become the Bush administration's most vocal defender.

"My impression was that Colin was no longer a Republican."

Was he ever one to begin with?

God Bless Vice-President Cheney. If the man ever wanted to run for President, he’d have my vote in a second. It looks like 2012 is going to be populated by 2008 re-treads and losers like Romney, Palin and maybe Huckaphony. They are all midgets compared to Dick Cheney.

Quite frankly, George W. Bush is a midget compared to Dick Cheney. The GOP ticket in 2000/2004 had the wrong guy at the top.

Sorry BushBots, sometimes the truth just hurts.

Cheney just puts his view out there, it doesn’t matter a bit to him if he is called names, mocked, or what have you, it’s just “right there”.

“Release the memos and we’ll see what was produced”

Spot Mr. Cheney, spot on.

We are up to three political parties. Conservative, Democrat and Socialist. All those moderate Republicans, who believe in a strong defense, believe in fiscal responsibility, who believe in tough illegal immigration policies, but who re pro-abortion or couldn’t care less about gay marriage are Democrats.

The people of America and the Republican primary voters would never support Cheney. He scares the former, and the association with GWB would hurt him badly among the latter.

Just like McCain, Powell long ago calculated that there was more personnel and political advantage to be had as a nominal Republican when bashing conservatives. Neither would be of any political consequence if they identified themselves as Dems.

Unbelieveable!!

On second thought, no it's not...

There once was a time Richard Nixon was declared politically dead, around 1962, compounding 1960. Things changed. There once was a time Ronald Reagan was declared politically dead, around 1976, compounding 1964. Things changed. It is 2009. It is quite likely that things will change between now and the next political election cycle. Not saying that the former Vice President even wants to run. But things will change.

Nothing. She’s a fine woman and should remain Governor of Alaska for as long as she wants. But she doesn’t have the experience or the intellect to win the presidency. If we hitch our wagons to Palin, we’ll have 4 more years (or more!!) of the Muslim Marxist.

We DONT need a 2008 retread in 2012. In this entire vast country full of smart, talented conservatives, cant we find someone new who will excite our base and the entire nation?

What makes you think that she doesn’t have the intellect to run for President?

And by 2012, she’ll have been Governor for six years, that’s more experience than Romney had when he ran for President.
