A former US military contractor who shot and killed a defenceless and handcuffed member of the Taleban walked free today after a judge decided he had been provoked by the Afghans brutality.
The extraordinary case of Don Ayala, a former US Army Ranger...ended in a Virginia courtroom when he was sentenced to probation for the killing of Abdul Salam in November last year.
US prosecutors...originally charged Alaya with murder....But the judge decided that probation was warranted under the circumstances. Alaya was also fined $12,500.
Ayala had pleaded guilty to the voluntary manslaughter of Salam, an undercover member of the Taleban, whom he shot in the temple.
On November 4 last year in the southern Afghan village of Chehel Gazi, Ayala, who had retired from the US Army and was working as a military contractor, was part of a team aimed at helping US soldiers understand Afghan culture. With him was Paula Loyd, an anthropologist embedded with the unit.
Minutes before he was shot, Salam had been chatting with Loyd about the price of fuel. Suddenly, he threw a bucket of petrol on her and set her on fire.
Soldiers dragged Loyd, 36, to a sewage-filled drainage ditch to put out the flames. It took three men, including Ayala, to subdue and handcuff Salam. The Taleban later claimed responsibility for the attack.
When others told Ayala how badly Loyd was injured, he put a 9mm pistol to Salams head and pulled the trigger. Salam died instantly. Loyds death was far longer and more painful....She clung to life for two months before finally dying on January 7 at Brooke Army Medical Centre in San Antonio.

God bless this brave MAN!
The fella’s mind was clouded by rage...He should have calmed down, located a chain saw and removed the terrorist’s arms at the shoulder and his legs at the hips...And then of course, made sure the scum received appropriate medical attention to keep him alive...
A good taleban is a DEAD taleban.

That dude deserved it too.

Paula Loyd was an unarmed social scientist assigned to help soldiers relate to the local Afghan population. At least that's what the paper said. Hmmmm.....
Yes Ayala hero... no Gitmo for that Jihadist scum. Just a bullet in the head a quick ride back to hell
...Live in Cain-Tuck, been here two year. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, my father was a Naval officer. You can imagine my family moved around. Mayport, FLA is the southest I lived in the US, but Canal Zone and trampin’ south into South America isn’t pertinent...
...Killing is not the same as murder. To kill is justifiable if in self defense; kill or be murdered. I agree...
...Entitled to kill. In war, yes, rules of engagement. The military are hired killers, might sound harsh, but that’s their job, in war, to kill the enemy. I agree...
...But, acting as he did from rage or emotion for a horrendous act is the question. You, “if I had been there” would have done the same. With courage and no fear. I would have done the same, but, after the fact, the rules may come back against me...
...Granted, this is not a war with “rules”, that’s a joke! This is war to end our civilization, no rules. I support the verdict, and this man, and if we are to end this war for the sake of our nation, don’t have any rules. Wipe them out, that should be our task...
DEADLY DUTY: Paula Loyd (left) and Michael Bhatia two anthropologists with Massachusetts roots have been killed serving in the Armys Human Terrain Teams program

Pass the hat. I'll chip in to help pay his fine.
God.
Admittedly. But a .22 would have performed the same service at a tenth the price. And the 9mm could have gone on to slay more ragheads at greater distance.
Conservation of resources. Never use more tool than the job calls for.
To be "blunt" about it, a large club would have worked.
