Giant waste of taxpayer expense that cost $350k. There's a letter posted on John McCain's website from Defense Secretary Robert Gates about it:

"The idea was to use the April 27 flight for publicity pictures that included the Statue of Liberty and the New York skyline. Instead, 911 emergency lines were clogged by people who saw the planes and thought it might be another terrorist attack, similar to the one on Sept. 11, 2001, when planes crashed into the World Trade Center, killing almost 3,000 people." -Secretary Gates
